The meme coin OZMPC, named similarly to the popular diabetes drug Ozempic but unaffiliated with it, has launched on Coinbase’s blockchain platform, Base. Despite using the name "Ozempic," it has no authorization from Novo Nordisk, the drug’s maker, which holds the global rights to the Ozempic name and could potentially pursue legal actions against the crypto token. OZMPC introduced a hefty 50% tax on transactions for the first two blocks after launch, ostensibly to counteract the actions of "sniper bots." This tax significantly reduced the initial funds of early investors, collecting under $1 million, which the creators intend to reinvest in the project. These funds are earmarked for marketing, animation, and reducing the token supply; about $150,000 has already been used to burn some of the token supply. However, the token's value has plummeted by 65% from its peak, trading well below one penny with a minimal market cap. Gecko Terminal cautions that the liquidity issues could cause significant price variations across different exchanges. The launch and operations of OZMPC are indicative of the broader meme coin trend, where projects often lack substantial planning or formal documentation like whitepapers, similar to the ICO craze of 2018.
