Weak Conservatives - Vegas Mayor Switches Party
The Problem With The Canadian Conservatives

The 2019 federal election is beginning to fade from the collective memory of Canada as the Liberal government continues on in its agenda- life is as it was before. But for conservatives, particularly the Conservative Party of Canada, this should be a time of deep introspection and reassessment. This election was well within the grasp of the Andrew Scheer and his party. The incumbent party was embroiled in scandal and many opinion polls saw the country warming back up to the right. Yet, despite receiving the majority of votes, the CPC failed to unseat Trudeau’s Liberals. Why was this the case?

In the age of extreme polarization and western populism, the centrist falls to the wayside.

Right Now: What has become of Canadian conservatism?

Barry Cooper: Scholars disagree about whether conservatism exists in Canada and, if it does, how to describe it. Part of the Right Now series

Across the free world, the rise of populism and the decline of open debate has stressed our traditional democratic and societal institutions. New parties and movements are emerging to represent constituencies that have little connection to the political ideologies of the past. What does conservatism mean in Canada today? Is there a set of principles that self-identified conservatives could agree on, and that political parties running on right-of-centre platforms would embrace? Would the country’s historical conservative thinkers recognize the movement as it stands today? In an ongoing National Post series, contributors assess the current state of Canadian conservatism — and offer their thoughts on what it should be. Here, Barry Cooper examines Canadian conservatism past and present.

North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee switches to Republican Party

North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee announced Tuesday he's switching his party affiliation from Democratic to Republican.

Lee revealed his switch on Fox News and followed with a statement through his political committee explaining his decision.

He said that while he was previously a registered Democrat, he voted for former President Donald Trump twice and has long-held conservative values, like supporting gun rights.

"Though I've been a registered Democrat on paper my entire life, I made the switch in my heart a long time ago, because on some things, there’s simply no compromise," Lee said.

He also blamed the new slate of progressive leadership at the Nevada State Democratic Party as one of the reasons for his switch.
