From amazing delicious tropical fruits to weird, gritty fruits growing in your own backyard we cover them all. It's important to remember that not all fruits look like fruits and you'll soon learn what I'm talking about.
10. Salak Fruit - 0:12
Salak fruit, also known as snake fruit, comes from a species of palm tree in south east asia. It gets it’s name from it’s scaly snake like appearance and is about the size of a fig. The outer shell and seed are inedible but the yellowish flesh is, which has the appear of a clove of garlic but tastes mostly sweet with a bit of sour and hints of pineapple and banana.

Wood Apples, native to India, have the shape of an apple but appears to be made of wood. Wood Apples are reputed for their medicinal properties, which includes relief of constipation, diarrhea, indigestion and respiratory problems.

Gac fruit, which originates in south east asian, is an orange to reddish colored fruit on the outside with a blood red inside that resembles bloody organs. Gac fruit is an incredibly rare fruit that is only harvested in December and January and often served at Vietnamese ceremonies and weddings.

Jabuticaba, is a grape like fruit that grows right out of the bark of the Jabuticababeira tree. Jabuticaba has anti cancer properties, can be used to treat swollen tonsils and is an effective treatment for asthma and diarrhea when dried out.

Hala fruit is a species of screwpine that is native to eastern Australia and Hawaii. Hala has a spherical core with up to 200 phalanges that grow outwards. Theses phalanges contain a very sweet juice, for this reason you would tend to chew on hala fruit vs. eat hala fruit.

10. Sapodilla - 0:17
Sapodilla or Chikoo as it’s known on the Indian sub continent, is a fruit that is commercially grown for making chewing gum. This Central American fruit is brown on the outside and orange. The flesh looks like a cantelope on the inside but don’t be fooled it tastes nothing like one. The sapodilla tastes sweet but with almost a savory note to it.
9. Durian - 1:07
This iconic spiky fruit grows on a tree that can be as tall as a 15 story building. It is known as the king of fruits, durian has been known to increase libido and is considered a warming food, after eating during one may feel their body temperature rise like wrapped in a warm blanket. Durian is a rich source of folic acid, folate, iron, manganese and copper.
8. Tamamoro - 2:05
The tree tomato or Tamamoro is a brightly colored fruit that can be yellow, red or orange. This fruit is native to Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Chile and Bolivia. Tamamoro grows on a tree that measure 16 feet or 5 meters tall that produces fruit 4 years after being planted. It tastes sour and pungent, leaves you with dry mouth. The flavor is strong and not particularly good which is why it is recommended to eat it blended with lemon and apple.
7. Prickly Pear - 3:00
The cactus pear or prickly pear is a fruit that grows right off the pad of a cactus. This is not to be confused with the cactus apple which is a different fruit all together. Prickly pears grow in areas with desert conditions and thrive in lower, warmer elevations. It can be very difficult to pick them, use tongs to avoid spine pricks.

These small berries are native to Europe and grow on a bush that is as tall as a person. They are commonly known as white currant or as swedish berries. These berries grow in clusters on various parts of the bush which always show up during the summer months. They taste different then black or red currants most notably they are sweeter. There are different varieties of white currants including one that is a light pink color. They are high in fiber, vitamins B,C,E and K as well as calcium, iron, manganese, phosphorus and potassium.

This melon also referred to as Chinese Hami melon or snow melon comes from the Hami region of Northern China. This delicious melon was given to Qing emperors for centuries by the people of the Hami region. The hami melon is typically 1.5 to 2x larger than a cantaloupe but can be the size of a watermelon.

Now you might be wondering why is a banana on this list? Well the thai banana is no ordinary banana, the taste is so exceptional they earned a spot of their own. Thai bananas as you might have guessed come from Thailand and are easily identified by their shape. They are short, fat bananas that almost look like baby bananas but with a larger circumference. The taste of these bananas is really hard to put into words but if you start with the taste of a normal grocery store cavendish banana, add a lot more sweetness then add in some very unique tropical flavours. It’s almost like they have hints of mango, coconut and passionfruit in there not only in taste but with the smell as well.
