Are safety glasses bulletproof? Lets find out! You'll be surprised!! #MayhemCountryLiving
Here is what I found All shooting glasses must meet one of two standards for eye protection. One is set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The ANSI standard is referred to as Z87; you will see this marked on the glasses you use. The Z87 standard involves a .25 steel ball traveling at 150 fps. This standard is fine for ricochet situations but will not stop objects traveling at speeds more than twice that speed. Shotgun pellets for example travel at speeds of 1000 fps or more.
The military standard of MIL-PRF-31013 covers a .15 diameter metal ball traveling at speeds of 650 fps, which is closer to the actual conditions of shooting but still not close to the speeds of shotgun pellets. This is a very strong standard that most shooting glasses do not meet. The military has a second standard which is not as strong for a .22 diameter metal ball traveling at 550 fps.
If you are in the market for shooting glasses, look for quality eyewear that at least meets Military or ANSI standards. Remember: shooting glasses are meant to protect from ricochets, debris and flying brass, not direct impacts from a shotgun, pistol or rifle. In every situation, eye protection will give you peace of mind that your vision is well protected. Taken from https://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting-Glasses-Buyers-Guide/532383.uts
