After almost 10 years I return to Red River Gorge and spend a whirl wind afternoon checking out some of my old stomping grounds around the gorge. Hopefully this will be just the beginning of some new explorations in the future.
After digging through my pile of SD cards to save some work files on I actually came across some long lost video from by second (back up) GoPro I usually take on all my dives, though the footage is a lower resolution . It still brought back fond memories of my second Ocean Dive I had ever made at this point. It made me realize all the things I enjoyed about Scuba Diving and the adventures it has brought to my life over the last 4-5 years now. The words I speak in this video are not my own, but those of my dive instructor Barry Burton owner of Smoky Mountain Divers in Kingsport TN who put the same thoughts I have to words many many years ago. If you have thought Scuba Diving might be something you want to try, why wait any longer. Give it a try, you don;t know what you are missing out on!

The historic Hunting Island lighthouse was originally constructed in 1859 and is the only lighthouse in the state of South Carolina that is open to the public. From the top platform, for those who are adventurous enough to climb the 167 step spiral staircase, one truly can get a birds eye view of the Atlantic Ocean, the park and surrounding marshes from about 132 feet above the ground.
Lighthouse Fees & Hours
The park collects a $2.00 fee to climb the 167 steps in the lighthouse, but the view is definitely worth it. Admission is from 10:00 am - 4:45 pm daily March - October, and until 3:45 pm November - February. During inclement weather, it may be closed.
Lighthouse History & Features
The first lighthouse was destroyed by the confederates during the beginning of the Civil War to prevent the Union from using it as a means of navigation. It was rebuilt and placed back into service in 1875. The purpose of this lighthouse was to warn ships to stay far away, as there are many hazards such as sandbars, wrecks, surf and treacherous currents. It was deactivated in June of 1933.
A unique feature of this lighthouse is that it was constructed using cast iron plates and designed to be dismantled in case it ever needed to be relocated. As fate would have it, due to erosion of the beach in 1889, the lighthouse was moved inland 1 1/4 miles from its original site to where it presently stands.

Loch Low-Minn Diver Resort located in Athens, TN is a top notch dive site located in East TN. They offer camping cabins, air fills, and tent camping. The dive site its self is one of few you can see large paddle fish. They offer several wrecks and you might even see a shark while diving this site. Although we were not lucky enough to see the paddle fish on this trip you may very well get to see the shark in this video. This was my wife's first open water dive since her open water certification a couple of weeks ago. So she got to stretch her water wings here and see just how much fun scuba diving can be.

The Devils Run at Ginnie Springs is made up of the: Little Devil, Devils Eye, and the Devils Ear. The "Ball Room" in located in the Ginnie Spring itself. Cave Divers travel here from all over the world to dive the Ginnie Spring Cave system. Devils Eye and Devils Ear are both entrances to the GInnie Springs cave system. The outside air temp on this day was hovering near 100 degrees which made for a very comfortable dive in the year round 72 degree waters of Ginnie Springs. Hope you enjoy the video as much as we enjoyed the process of shooting it!

Today the club spent a little time setting up a field HF Radio Station to prep for a possible emergency and just for the fun of it too!
It was at this very spot that July 28, 2022 during the catastrophic flooding in Southeastern KY there was nearly 8 feet of water and only the roof of this shelter was above the water. Ham Radio was the only form of comms able to still operate and let loved ones outside the area know what was going on!
