It's usually kids and grandparents that react to my music. This kid is dancing (2:13) and getting into the blazing solos! I'm improvising all of this. I have not been able to play outside since 2019. Bar gigs no longer exist. All clubs are closed in Vancouver. Busking was banned in 2020 and I got sidetracked by a near death experience in April 2021. Busking is now the only way I can play in public. I will be attempting to go out again in April. Dinosaurs die hard.

1) Street playing is not all fun and games and dancing kids. Did this for 5 years. I regularly faced not only verbal abuse, but physical assault as I worked a few blocks from downtown eastside Vancouver. I'm surrounded by addicts, drunks, and people who should be in mental homes.
2) I'm unemployed as a musician. I lost all busking work 2020 (it was banned) and live music scene here died years ago. I've been isolated for two years, and also had a serious brain aneurism in April 2021 and almost died. Canada has gone full communist and it's a dire situation.

I used to lead many bands from 2006 to 2018. That's all gone. It's also a lot more hassle, and less money, to run a band than play by myself.

I always loved Mick Taylor's first solo album from 1979. I bought it in 1979 on vinyl and still own it. It sold 4 copies and was completely forgotten. I remember getting a phone call from Taylor in 1980 thanking me personally for buying the album. Even Mick Jagger thought the album was "terrible", probably because he was still pissed that Taylor quit in 1974 and they had listen to Ron Wood.
It's actually a really good album, and continued to showcase Taylor's increasing jazz/fusion/blues chops, albeit with some weak vocals. Musically, it was so far ahead of what the Stones were doing that it was easy to see why Taylor left in 1974, which Taylor even admitted in 1978. "I got tired of playing on their simple songs, which offered no challenge to me."
Keith Richards reportedly heard the soloing on 'Spanish/A minor' and dropped a cig from his mouth in astonishment, saying "Can't believe we let Taylor go so easily." Can you imagine this song on a Stones album? You thought the solo on 'time waits for no one' from 1974 was advanced? Listen to 'Spanish/A minor'. (spotify is your only hope) I love JB, but Jeff Beck would shit has pants if he heard the solo playing on this track. Sure, JB was already learning a lot from Max Middleton years before, (JB group, Blow by blow) but I would put this Taylor instrumental (written by Middleton) against anything done by any guitarist in existence. Yes, it's that good. It's far beyond fusion as it actually says something other than playing a million bullshit notes as was the fusion trend at the time. Unfortunately, Mick admitted that after that mind blowing solo , "...I have nothing left in me. What's the point of trying to beat it?" and never released another album.
Avoiding the main part of the song, I chose to play a loop from the outro of the song (end of side 2) which is just Max Middleton (ex Jeff Beck group) playing a descending semi-tone chromatic scale starting at A minor. Lots of fun to jam over since Taylor wasn't playing much on the outro. Incredibly, in 35 minutes of free form playing, I got ONE tip. I can guarantee that I am the only on youtube who will ever play anything from this 1979 Mick Taylor solo album. Even Taylor never played this section outside the studio.

This was Christmas 2014. We were already done but the crowd wanted more, so we played 'don't stop believing'. I am putting this one up mainly for the crowd getting into it and dancing, and showing what life used to be like before George Orwell became truth. Ivanhoe usually had the most active audiences of any bar I played at. Sadly, it's another club that was shut down in the great live music purge of 2010-2018, and now no live venues are left in Vancouver. My last band gigs were in 2015. I continued with duo gigs until 2018, when even those became impossible to continue.
