I'm always amazed how many generator owners don't have a feed in socket or isolator switch then rely on dragging numerous extension leads out to power multiple appliances every time the grid goes down.
That's a mess, inconvenient and can be dangerous.
A feed in socket and isolator costs very little and saves loads of hassle so I'd definitely recommend installing that if you're preparing for a grid-down situation - next time you have a sparky at the house doing work get them to fit the gear and even if you don't own a generator and could rent or borrow one you'll have hassle free power in a grid-down event.

Ideally I could do with a bigger generator but the little 2kW one I have is very quiet, economical and will run most appliances and all the lights in the house no problem - my plan is to buy a 6kW generator when funds allow.
We also have a combined total of 2kW portable power banks which can be joined up and fed into the generator feed - they are handy as they can be charged using solar, mains power or via a generator and as they're portable they can be used for a camping / camper van type of holiday too.
As far as portable solar power stations go I'd say don't bother with anything under 500W and ideally go for 1000W.

Power is so important in a grid-down situation so I like to be well prepared for plan A, B, C and D.
Plan A - mains power when available (or affordable)
Plan B - 12.6kW solar system with 11.4kW battery back-up
Plan C - 2kW petrol generator
Plan D - A combined 2kW of power banks and multiple portable solar panels
Ideally I'd also have a companion to the Plan B which would be a wind generator of around 6kW and 6kW - 10kW battery back-up........but my wife would kill me....
