Russia Ukraine tensions. retail sales. Walmart earnings: What to know this week
Choppiness in U.S. stocks is expected to persist this week as investors grapple with the prospect of swifter monetary tightening and escalating geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine. And a new read on retail sales will be released Wednesday giving investors more insights into consumer spending. Concerns over military action by the Kremlin have created a new headwind for investors. particularly after the White House warned on Friday that a possible invasion of Ukraine by Russia could come within days. The statement dealt a fresh blow to markets. “The Russia Ukraine tensions have hovered over already shaky investor sentiment.” Comerica Wealth Management Chief Investment Officer John Lynch said in a note. “Investors have been counting on a diplomatic resolution. but recent developments indicate this may be wishful thinking and therefore. not fully priced into the markets.” The geopolitical tensions add to the uncertainty around central bank policy that has dominated market sentiment in recent months. Friday’s warning by the Biden administration weighed on stocks and sent oil prices soaring to a seven year high. “By pushing energy prices even higher. a Russian invasion would likely exacerbate inflation and redouble pressure on the Fed to raise interest rates.” Comerica Bank Chief Economist Bill Adams said in a note. “From the Fed’s perspective. the...

Will Louisiana redistricting be impacted by Supreme Court ruling on Alabama?
As it became clear that Republican leaders planned to pass redistricting maps that would not expand minority seats in Congress or the Louisiana Legislature. Black lawmakers said they had two fallbacks—possible vetoes by Gov. John Bel Edwards or lawsuits. Now both of those options appear uncertain. according to LSU Manship School News Service. The Louisiana House and Senate both passed congressional redistricting plans last week by margins large enough to override vetoes by Edwards if lawmakers could muster those votes again. And last Monday. the Supreme Court delayed hearing a suit in a similar redistricting fight in Alabama in a move that legal experts say could hint at less court intervention in the redistricting process in the future. In a 5 4 vote. the court’s conservative majority let a redistricting plan passed by the Alabama Legislature stand through this fall’s midterm elections even though an appeals court had ruled that the law may have violated the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in failing to provide for a second minority majority congressional district. The Supreme Court said it would consider the merits of the Alabama case later. But that is not likely to happen until after the November elections. which will decide the balance of power in Congress. Peter Robins Brown. executive director for advocacy group Louisiana Progress. says the Supreme Court decision to let the GOP’s Alabama redistricting map stand for now is likely in Louisiana to “embolden those who were already planning to submit a map that would end up in court and make folks who were planning to challenge those maps feel a little worse.” Read the full story.

Opinion: Why gold isn’t likely to be a safe haven for your money if Russia invades Ukraine
Gold is rallying now but don’t be surprised to see prices fall if Russia invades Ukraine. That’s because the price of gold GC00. +1.68% usually declines in the wake of geopolitical crises. Investors betting on gold because of the Ukrainian crisis should re examine their assumptions. Perhaps the closest historical precedent to the current crisis was Russia’s annexation of Crimea in late February 2014. A month after Russia sent soldiers into Crimea. gold bullion was 3% lower than where it stood the day before. Three months later. the price of gold was 5.8% lower than before the invasion. That crisis constitutes just one data point. but gold’s experience is consistent with my analysis of gold’s reaction to other geopolitical crises. Consider the list that appeared in a recent MarketWatch article on how the stock market typically reacts to such crises. The table below reports the percentage of time gold declined in the wake of the dozen crises on the list that have occurred since the early 1970s. which is when gold began trading freely in the U.S. Given that there are only a dozen crises in this sample. the percentages shown in the table are insignificantly different from 50%. That means that our best bet is that gold’s direction in the wake of a crisis is largely a matter of a coin flip. Gold as a stock market hedge The same conclusion emerges when we approach the...

A pastor baptized people for decades using one wrong word. Now those are all considered invalid
(CNN)A priest has resigned after a church investigation found he performed invalid baptisms throughout most of his more than 20 year career. according to Bishop Thomas Olmsted of the Diocese of Phoenix. Father Andres Arango. who performed thousands of baptisms. would say. 'We baptize you in the name of the Father. and of the Son. and of the Holy Spirit.' But Olmsted explained the words 'We baptize' should have been 'I baptize' instead. 'The issue with using 'We' is that it is not the community that baptizes a person. rather. it is Christ. and Him alone. who presides at all of the sacraments. and so it is Christ Jesus who baptizes.' Olmsted wrote in a message to parishioners posted last month. The error also means that because baptism is the first of the sacraments. some people will need to repeat other sacraments. according to the diocese webpage for frequently asked questions. CNN has reached out to the diocese for comment on other sacraments. 'It saddens me to learn that I have performed invalid baptisms throughout my ministry as a priest by regularly using an incorrect formula. I deeply regret my error and how this has affected numerous people in your parish and elsewhere.' Arango wrote in his own message on the site. Olmsted said the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 2020 affirmed that when a baptism is conferred with the formula 'We baptize ...' it...
