Hack Reason 5 with Logic Pro X in Mavericks - Mac OS X 10.9 - Tutorial
A short tutorial on how to setup and use your old copy of Propellerheads Reason 5 with Logic Pro X on Mac OS X, Mavericks 10.9 w/ an older PC or Laptop. This is done with an older Windows 7 Laptop with Reason 5.1 installed. I show how to network into it from OS X and then route the Midi and audio back into Logic Pro X and how to sync them both perfectly. The other cool thing about this is: you can save on your CPU resources by splitting the CPU and memory usage between two computers.
FYI: If you actually tried to install Reason 5 on a Mac running Mavericks 10.9, you will know that you can not use Reason 5 with it anymore... To those that suggest that I use 32 Lives: How can you get 32 Lives to Rewire an older DAW that is unsupported in a newer version of OS X? Unless your try the "Reason Demo Hack" where some have gotten it to work by installing Reason 5 with the Reason 7 demo open, but that does not work all the time and is machine specific. Plus, 32 lives would not even work with Reason, b/c it is not a VST/AU plugin, it's a DAW.
Why?? I like the ability that I can still bring in all my old refills, which can't be found anywhere else and was only made for Reason 5. Also, I really like some of the sounds I can make with Thor, just b/c I know it better than most newer VSTs And the main reason: the pure challenge of it all! I like making music with things that can't really work with other things... in-turn, you discover new sound possibilities. Cheers! ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lpbsuw2VsBI
Over 68 Tracks of Pianos, Rock Guitars, Cellos, Violins, Synth Arps, Pads, Bass, 808 Sub Kicks, plus 20 separate percussion elements. Designed with 15 different bus effects using Waves, Kontakt, Omnisphere and Audio Damage Plugins. This project took over 40 hours to build, no detail was spared. Plus I took the time to Bounce down separate stem tracks, one for Dry and one with FX, then I added them back into the Mix and disabled it's matching instrument and did another Mixdown to really bring all home and glue it together.
I started as an electronic musician, and FOH sound man over 15 years ago, and never stopped. I originally started a label under the name FadedShadows, then changed it to LogicProHacks, where my goal is to do more on the technology side of music and create Logic Pro X templates and YouTube tutorials.

Hardstyle In your face squak Kick that hits hard and drops like a Jack Hammer ;-) I did this in a faster BPM b/c it just sounded better to me. I plan to release the template and do a tutorial on how I made the Hardstyle kick. Please note, everything here is a work in progress and I considered draft status. I used a MIDI file which is based on a hardstyle song called ARKAINE Jakkhammer The Sky

Hoping this will bring much conversation about the topic of: "Audio over Networking". In the video: A cool audio Hack where I am testing out multiple computer sound sources through a local area network (LAN). Using a couple of programs called: Jack Router and rtpMIDI. My Hardware: Two older PC laptops and a Mac Pro 1,1. The 1st, laptop is Win 7 / Reason 5, an the other PC is a Win 7 with Ableton Live 9, The Mac Pro (Master), is recording to Logic Pro X. Network settings: A simple VLAN on a dedicated Cisco 2960G Gigabit switch. Audio Settings: A very pristine 48 kHz Sample Rate, 128 I/O buffer size. I was able to get the Jackd Net protocol to pump audio over the network in Cisco VLAN. MIDI: Is perfectly synced to all machines using Mac OS X MIDI LAN studio (AMS) and Tobias Erichsen's rtpMIDI for the windows side. I plan to make another video in great detail on how to set all of this up, real soon. However, on my YouTube channel, I have an older video that just shows how to network and sync between Ableton and Reason here: https://youtu.be/wbTkUp3AFM8

EPIC, Huge Sounds with this beast of Synth called the Yamaha TX-816. And for a bonus I added in my DX7 Synthesizer. I quickly go over how I have everything hooked up from the Audio to the MIDI connections and then I play a Live Set where I play all Synths at the same time with a TX-816 and the beloved DX7. I am using two MIDI 4x4 MIDI plus Midi interfaces to connect all 8 MIDI ports. I am also using Reaper is my Control DAW to control each MIDI signal.

In this video I show how to harness the true power of Propellerhead's Reason Rewire MIDI with Logic Pro X and make some really cool beats! I show that you can hack the MIDI patterns in Reason Redrum and how to edit those patterns in Logic. I also show how to route separate audio tracks from Reason into the individual bus channels with in Logic Pro.
Send us a screenshot showing how you shared and spread the word about LogicProHacks, we will send you a free LogicProHacks Template of your choosing. Yes, that is right, but it has to be good...

In this video I explain how to setup the hardware and explain what works and why it works this way. I also show how to route the MIDI and Audio for the perfect dual PC combination of Reason 10 and Logic Pro X. I also explain why I choose to not use Rewire anymore. The main purpose is to distribute the processing power between two computers, A mac Pro and Mini ITX Windows 7 PC.
Yes, I could by a new Mac Pro, but the cost of a new one is in the 4K~6K range for a nice used one from eBay, yes, I said used. I found by upgrading some key parts in my old system and adding in a cheap 2nd PC. I was able to gain a huge CPU performance and save big on my limited budget.
You want to follow along and you are using Logic Pro X and Reason, you will need two computers, a decent older Mac Pro, and PC, plus two Audio/Midi interfaces. All of this can be found for very cheap on eBay, Craigslist or the local Pawn shop. My local pawn shop is great, as they offer Layaway. The PC does not have to be the best, just enough to run Reason, I am running the latest, version 10.
Over time, I have also made some custom upgrades for each computer, which includes a heavy amount of memory, a decent CPU and hard drive for the OS, plus a fast 2nd hard drive to be used as samples and project storage. When you offload your samples and projects to secondary fast hard drives like SSD or a 10K Raptor (7200 RPMs will not cut it anymore), you will gain a huge performance boost.
Keep in mind, certain audio interfaces offer both Audio and MIDI and certain interfaces offer only Audio. Plus some interfaces will only offer one main audio output and many inputs, whereas other interfaces will offer may audio-outputs and only a few audio-inputs; so it's important you do your research before you buy.
