Alexander Comitas: Concerto for piano and orchestra, version with wind orchestra. First movement
Live performance that took place on June 26, 2011, in the Frtis Philips Music Centre, Eindhoven, of my concerto for piano and orchestra, version with wind orchestra.

Bas Verheijden, solo piano
Orkest Zuid conducted by Jos van de Braak

For me personally, writing this piano concerto has been more or less an experiment. I was very curious to know what it would be like to endow the piece with characteristics typical of a classical-romantic piano concerto. Not only is it firmly rooted in tonality and does it have the traditional three movements fast -- slow -- fast, with a sonata form first movement and a rondo-like third one; it also has a typical 'grand theme' apotheosis, toward the end of the final movement.

In fact, I have tried to find a possible answer to the question what a concerto by Tchaikovsky or Rachmaninov might look like, if it could have been written in the 21st century. Nevertheless, the result is not a piece 'in ancient style', since I didn't limit myself to writing in a classical-romantic musical idiom. Composing this concerto turned out to be very challenging for me, demanding all my creative powers. In doing so, writing this piece was also very rewarding, giving me great joy and satisfaction.

I also wrote a version of this concerto for piano and symphony orchestra.
