There was a time when people would gather in public places and play live music. Is was loud and vibrant and slow and humble and sometimes even magical. Live music breaking through the electric air of a bar packed with alcohol and laughter. This video is from one of those nights. A very cool Irish bar on Fairfax Blvd in Los Angeles was known for it's amazing live music and Guinness on tap. Flogging Molly , an amazing Irish band was basically born at Molly's and did many legendary shows. This particular night at Molly's it was another local legend, Abraham Cloud. The band , this night was Lee Walters on drums, Johnny G Gregovski on bass and Mike Packard on guitar. The video was shot by Randy Morgan , probably on an old HI-8 Video Recorder. This is , "Baby Lemonade," the kind of ballad you might hear way down the rabbit hole in Alice's Wonderland. Who knows what it means....or where it goes.... just close your eyes and float downstream.

Here is Abraham Cloud showing some heavy Woody Guthrie influence singing a protest song Although written over 25 years ago "In The Thick Of It" is just as valid as ever. It's about people making big mistakes. Good people who are caught in the influences of a corrupt society. The Relevancy is striking when Abraham tell's us about a table of angry men who decide to profit from poison drinking water ( like Flint Michigan today. )
In the first lines of the song a blast goes off. In the eighties it was drive-by shootings were common now its cops, robbers, protesters, thugs, religious freaks just mayhem. This song could have easily have been bout the Furguson shooting or any of the violence that plagues city streets everywhere.
This was recorded for a compilation record called "Breakaway , The First Year" . Abraham Cloud was a regular on stage at the Breakaway club with the likes of Lucinda Williams Lowen and Navarro, Darius and Gerry Giddons of Walking Wounded.
Sounds like some heavy Springsteen and Dylan influences and enough lyrics to qualify as a rap song. "In the Thick of It" was released on a compilation record by Mountain Railroad Records.
walking across the street
I heard what I thought was a backfire
I turned to see a child bleeding
and a car full of kids driving by,
my-oh-my, is this what they do for fun these days ?
they were all good people
they were really good people
they just didn't think anybody
cared about them
they were fine, fine people
led respectable lives
they just got caught up in the thick of it
meanwhile, on the other side of town
a steel-worker hit the ground
and in a cloud of resounding machine-gun-fire
they found twenty people dead
and a pink slip next to his head
that said,"we regret to inform you,
but due to the performance of our new machinery , we don't need you. "
they were all good people
they were really good people
they just didn't think anybody
cared about them
they were fine, fine people
led respectable lives
they just got caught up in the thick of it
in the thick of it you don't know no one
in the thick of it you don't have no home
youre searchin' hard for a light
in the thick of it.
up above the skyline in a high-rise they call "Heaven"
an angry table of old men decided to call up an old friend
make it easy for the company to dump sewage in the riverbed
and another one dies from too good a time
and another one tries it for the first time
and another one sticks the knife in the back
of another one so he can get some
just a little bit more, you feel a little bit less
'til you squeeze out the little bit you got left
and the only one there with anything to show
is the man who just stole your shadow
you can blame it on the government or blame it on the church
you can blame it on the weat

It's always there in the distance. That thing, that place, that person that would make it all perfect. That Miracle Mile, where dreams come true. Almost everyone is on that search , or at least was at sometime. It never really goes away though. That desire for a dream career that took you 3,000 miles from your home. Your undying desire to keep an old flame alive long after it has died. That struggle for success. That dream for a soul-mate. When you are young the quest for the Miracle Mile is sometimes stronger than even survival necessities like food. People are said to be driven to achieve their goals. Are they driving to the Miracle Mile ? Where million dollar contracts are handed out at drive thru restaurants and Mansions lay open for the taking. Where gold rocks the size of baseballs are sitting calmly in the dirt waiting to energize anyone with the time to look. This is a little inspired by an Eddie Money pop-tastic vision of America like "Two Tickets To Paradise." and a little by a bit harder view of the American Dream like Springsteen's "Born To Run."

That feeling of working, rehearsing, promoting and dreaming is all worth it for those few glorious moments on stage. But they are quickly followed by a crushing lonliness and devastation that is hard to describe. Going home alone after an amazing time in the spotlight can really leave you questioning your existance completely. Probably why so many performers develop substance abuse problems. The come down is just too much to take. Almost like soldiers returning from war to live in the suburbs.... the stillness is too much to take. Peace of mind and quiet can easily become enimies when you have been on the roller coaster of emotion bathing in the electric dopamine of pure spine tingling excitement.
Middle of the Sun
after the band has left the stage
and all the excitement starts to fade
when everybody's with the one they love
I'm sitting her wondering
just what I've done
to be stuck here in the middle
trying to solve this riddle
stuck here in the middle of the sun
it gets so cold and lonely here inside
knowing your smile could be so warm and bright
a little laughter from the star next door
reminds me how long it takes
to heal a sore
stuck here in the middle
trying to solve this riddle
stuck here in the middle of the sun
I can't help myself
that's why I've always needed someone else
to give me just a little
time to solve this riddle
I'm stuck here in the middle of the sun

"Corporate Wars" is the song that went missing . An odd combination of Lou Reed and Steely Dan it just kinda grooves along.
Long before the Video Game, "Corporate Wars" or the actual corporate wars that seem so common world wide these days , Abraham Cloud was telling an interesting little tale about an executive who lost his arms in the fierce fighting. (Seems limbs are lost every minute in Afghanistan these days.) And this high powered exec is forced into homeless foraging where he somehow regains his soul and his daughter's love. Hopefully someone will make a cheesy movie based on this song and give us all a fine date to look forward to. Til then enjoy this fan video for an odd unsung little tune.
Corporate Wars
Daddy don't drive pretty full length cars no more
He lost both his arms in the big time corporate wars
Your sister was really quite naive
To think he was a holy man
Daddy raised his children to believe economical dreams
When prices started fallin' that's when Daddy got down on his knees
the neighbors are all very kind
they sometimes go for walks with his mind
Your sister never witnessed a happier sight
the man she loved was too drunk to fight
and he was singin'
look at the bright side,
look at the fun you can have
but don't look around too much cause it might bring you down
You say you got a picture of the trip you took to Africa
When Daddy bought a village, an advantage in the corporate war
The natives even smiled when the flash went off
They liked the way he paid his bills
The natives loved to dance to the sleazy sub bohemian curl
When daddy couldn't buy it he decided to give it a whirl
Your sister never witnessed a happier sight
the man she loved was too drunk to fight
Its good to see you talking to the people who still love you again
We almost thought we lost you to the stiff-neck -corporate men
They always brought you home when they'd had enough
Funny how the good life gets rough

Another clip from ,"Time To Obey."
Some very important men
will be passing through town
they'll be very upset
cuz you let them down
they were counting on this generation
to just fall in line

Sometimes it feels like
Everything and Everyone
is wrong.
I've got to get away
Try and find a place
where I belong.
I'll go Flying Over You.
