Becky leads a talk with some of the Youth about Singleness. This is the first in the 'Hot Topic' series where various controversial or everyday topics that we don't always talk about enough as Christians.
Some Book/ Article Recommendations:
7 myths of Singleness- Sam Allberry (Would highly recommend everyone to read)
The Plausibility Problem- Ed Shaw (covers a lot about singleness as he talks about the LGBTQ+ issue)
Counterfeit Gods- Tim Keller (has some excellent chapters on Love as an idol)
None like him- Jen Wilkin (a big reminder of who God is and how we’re just not)

Some Discussion Questions to think about:
We’ve all been single at some points in our lives- how did/ do you feel about being single? What were/ are other people’s attitudes towards your singleness?
“Ask an honest married Christian and they'll tell you that marriage cannot bear the weight of having all our hopes, dreams and longings placed upon it” Andrea Trevenna. Discuss.
How do you think we can better value both single and married people in church?
Maybe encourage married people to reflect on how they view single people?
Do Married people think of Single people as part of their family? Do they include them in ‘family’ days out? Or in group meetings with other couples?
Or do Married people allow them to be part of a separate ‘singles’ group, exclude them by accident? How are single people meant to fulfil the need for family love + closeness if we don’t include them?
Do we not invite people because they’d be ‘third/fifth/seventh-wheeling’ or 'gooseberrying'? How might this make them feel?
Do we include single/child-less people as ‘parents’ in our children’s lives or do we secretly think they need to have kids of their own or a partner to be of value?
How can single people ask to be more included? And how can married people include them better?
What is 1 thing you’ll take away from this talk/ discussion?
