Smith and Burrows - Nihal Arthanayake BBC Radio 5 Live 24th February 2021
This was Tom and Andy's visit with Nihal Arthanayake for his Radio 5 afternoon show today, 24th February 2021. In terms of the kinds of topics covered, Nihal tended to lean further towards the mechanics that underpin the construction of a song, be it the techniques used or the influence of locations etc. and he managed to keep a long conversation very light. There was also an acoustic run through of Parliament Hill, which I believe is the same one from the master recording that's been doing the rounds on European radio lately. Sometimes it's nice to relax the boundaries of time constraint and just let your subjects breathe a little, which at just under 40 minutes in length is exactly what this felt like. Good job Nihal.
Watch out for two truly sensational reciprocal no-sells from Tom as he's caught on the receiving end of some lovely compliments from Andy. Beautifully awkward. Enjoy ;)

If you ever thought that Editors were national treasures and should be put in a museum somewhere....
A beautiful venue in an equally beautiful city, here's some footage of Editors' at Museo del Novecento for Milano Acoustics, in Milan on June 4th 2013. You get to enjoy Mr Smith and Mr Lockey doing their thing with both A Ton of Love and Nothing. As I recall this was done prior to a very intimate gig later on at Trussardi Cafè, where they performed 6 tracks in total before an extremely small (and lucky) crowd with Russell present on the keys.
This is the first time that the Museo del Novecento films have been available as one complete set, and it includes the walk into the venue made by the band right at the beginning which was taken from the official teaser clip.
There's a few of things to notice while you watch this performance; at the beginning of A Ton of Love you hear Tom being coached on how to pronounce the name of the venue in Italian. Secondly, this is the very definition of "acoustic" because neither of Tom or Justin's guitars are plugged in and there's no vocal mic. Lastly, there's a rare live key change during ATOL when Tom sings "A ton of love, a ton of hate". Hey, they may be little details but they still get noticed here at the Archive.
Enjoy the music ;)

This lively action took place across a weekend in June 2013 where Editors played two festival shows back to back, one at Hurricane and this one at Southside. On a return visit three years later, they were actually unable to take to the stage at both Hurricane and Southside because of atrocious weather conditions, but this time was distraction free.
I got this TV rip of Editors at Southside from a long time friend to the Archive, Dave Austria (thank you again, Sir). It differs slightly to the one you may have seen on YouTube at the time, in that this version is free from a couple of audio/video skips that happen during Two Hearted Spider and Papillon, flaws that I believe was inherent in the actual stream on the day of the concert. Not here. This is the best quality capture of Editors at Southside 2013 that we have.
Context is crucial when you're watching this set. I know that a lot of you will be used to seeing this line up playing together, it may even be that this was the version Editors that first got you hooked. What you should take into consideration is that just over a year prior to this show, Chris was excused, and that this new collection of musicians were still getting the feel of what it was like to perform on a stage together. Also, the band's 4th album The Weight of Your Love was still unreleased, with the official launch being 5 days away. Everything was still in a very nascent state, and uncertainty was still an unwelcome hitch-hiker that they accidentally picked up.
To make things even more improbable, absurdly so, Justin Lockey didn't even own a guitar when he was hired as Editors guitarist in the previous year. In comparative terms, he's like the skydiving instructor who dived out into the great blue yonder without the encumbrance of a pesky parachute, undergoing lessons on why gravity always wins and the unpleasantness of high-speed impact. In this case, Justin's landing was definitely better.
Highlights? Bones has a tasty bit of feedback as it commences, and An End Has a Start sounds great with Elliott's additional guitars and keys, as well as Justin's scratchy lead. Watch as the sun magically appears as Formaldehyde kicks off, momentarily buring the skin and dark soul of Mr Smith and there's some seriously freaky crowd dancing during Papillon. Munich has a delightful bout of lyrical meandering from Tom, although you should cut that brother some slack. He'd only performed that song 1,000,004 times up until that point...as well as actually being the sole author of those lyrics.
I kid, of course! I kid because I love.
Enjoy the music ;)

This is the pre-chat from the 3 hour live DJ set that Elliott and Russell played on the 27th April 2022. It was made available as part of the mixcloud audio-only version of the set, while the live video stream on the night came in literally just after this took place. Crafty buggers.
If you're looking for tasty morsels of gossip from the inner world of your favourite band, disappointment is your new best friend. They touch on musical tastes and influences, the attraction of the bass, what they're listening to and the correct title of a ham and pineapple pizza.
Ordinarily I would have posted the full video of the show but because it's essentially a collection of other people's music, an army of copyright lawyers would take out the Archive on YouTube forever. It's a shame because the audio version misses some of the magic, such as the mysterious disco dog that spent the gig under the turntables and, best of all, Russell lip-syncing to a little bit of Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles. Yep, it happened.

This is the third of four teaser videos that were released by the band during May/June of 2007, to build interest in Editors' second album An End Has a Start. The quality is...OK, not perfect, but the fact that these films have long since fallen off the internet is what compelled me to bring them back for any of you folks who've never seen them. If you'd like to know more about what it is you're actually watching here, drop by the Archive where I've put them all into some kind of context for you. Enjoy ;)

"That one, was alright"
You know how it is. You're exercising your imagination by making shapes from the passing clouds while you patiently wait out another Editors Absence, (which you shouldn't confuse with an Editors Abscess which is far more icky and painful), and all of a sudden the inactivity is halted by...this. Taken from The Weight of Your Love album, which some history buffs will suggest was Editors' very own begotten son, this is Tom providing an unexpected end to a seemingly interminable drought. I say this with the respect that its author deserves, and I really do mean that, but purely in terms of Editors fandom this is the purity of product that Smith and Burrows only partially delivers.
Maybe Tom choosing to randomly play this and put it out into the ether speaks to his current mainstream-pop disposition that the "Smith and Burrows Therapy Sessions" have allowed him to occupy? Editors have a catalogue of more predictable targets that he could have chosen but he tackles one of their most tricky, falsetto-heavy commercially minded ones instead.
It's a grand proclamation, but I think this is the best version of the song that we have with regards to its simplicity and delivery. It carries on the lineage of pretty much all of Editors' music, in that transforms into something else when it leaves the studio. There's an mp3 of the song over at the Archive using the address below, enjoy the music.

It was the F.A. Cup final here in the UK at the time of this broadcast, and it just so happens that King Leetch and Mr Smith supported the opposing teams. Oh the interpersonal friction, oh the tension! Here's Russell making a guest appearance on Talksport Radio to give his opinions on that impending football match between Arsenal and Aston Villa ;)

Tom and Andy were telephone guests of Sander Hoogendrn on 3FM this morning, and in addition to the short interview given, they performed a new song called "Spaghetti". It's featured on their upcoming album "Only Smith and Burrows is Good Enough", which is released on Friday 19th February 2021. Enjoy ;)

Somewhere, out on the lonely roads of Europe and armed only with an ear for good music and some battered recording equipment, GaryUK has been travelling again. This is his audio document of Editors' show in Vienna on the 7th Feb 2020, and once more we owe him a debt of gratitude for his efforts. Thank you, Sir. You're still the man.
There's a strange phenomenon taking place on this tour, and it revolves around an absence. This is the Black Gold Tour, a showcase for the album of the same name. Yet if you look at the setlists for the recent shows at this early stage of the campaign, you'll notice that one song is conspicuous in its invisibility. Where is Black Gold? I know that the running order is fluid and will no doubt include and exclude material as it develops along the way, but I wonder if we'll ever get to hear it live? That lyric "Throw your hands up if you're running scared" is just begging to be used as crowd-bait. I understand that Black Gold specifically refers to the collection of hits itself, rather than a single track on it. I get that. Still it doesn't remove the feeling that there's an uninvited guest that isn't present for the festivities. In movie terms, it's like Friday the 13th without Jason Voorhees, Halloween without Michael Myers or Jaws with no shark. All your left with is an hour and a half of family-friendly footage showing camping, trick-or-treating and people enjoying the water respectively.
The worst thing that could happen is that Black Gold as a live experience gets added to that exclusive list of things we haven't heard but desperately want to. Items like Dream Dark as Your Heaven, or the Flood sessions for album 4. If this is a logistic thing, then that's fair enough, but let's not forget they learned how to play all the songs on ITLAOTE live and that involved swapping instruments, often while they were playing. Maybe it'll show up later, maybe not.
Do you want to hear something peculiar? I had a dream a few weeks ago that R.E.M. were playing Orange Crush on a stage somewhere, and in the middle of the song Tom ran onstage and grabbed the megaphone from Mr Stipe. He shouted "That's pretty good, but watch this", before the whole band arrived onstage to play Black Gold. That they were all dressed in monk's habits is besides the point. Also, the fact that I was the only member of the audience, and may or not have been wearing pants, is equally irrelevant. Stop making this weird.
I've noticed that as loose as the playing has been in terms of altering certain components, they've also shown that they can be true to the recorded versions of their music. For example, An End Has a Start has new intro music, Spiders has a new beginning, but Bones has gone back to the controversial 75% "Retreats" take that appeared on AEHAS. The merge between Frankenstein and Papillon was also abandoned for this show, so I get a sense that you really don't know quite what you'll be getting from night to night. I think that will go some way to reducing the predictability and keeping everything fresh, mostly for the band themselves because after all they're the ones who are doing this in quick repetition for the duration of this tour.
I do find that I'm missing songs like Darkness at the Door, Hallelujah (So Low) and The Pulse, but I'm also excited at the slim chance that they or other lost classics will be returning. They've done it with Escape the Nest and Spiders, so who knows what they'll decide to bring back down the line? While we wait and wonder, enjoy the music ;)

This is a podcast of Tom on the now defunct Phantom 105.2 radio in
Ireland, which I'm pretty sure began its life as a pirate station back
in the day. Given the year of broadcast it's mostly about An End Has A Start, how the songs are written and Editors' affinity with Elbow. Enjoy ;)
