(CNN)Booster doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna coronavirus vaccines are safe. and they offer high levels of protection against severe Covid 19 even though that protection can wane over time. according to two studies published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday. Evidence of waning protection 'reinforces the importance of further consideration of additional doses to sustain or improve protection' against Covid 19 linked hospitalizatoions and emergency department visits.' the study says. One of the studies. published in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. examined vaccine effectiveness against Covid 19 hospitalizations and emergency department and urgent care visits among adults in the United States who were either fully vaccinated with two doses or received a third dose of vaccine as a booster. The data included 241.204 emergency department or urgent care visits and 93.408 hospitalizations across 10 states between August 26 and January 22. The data showed that vaccine effectiveness against emergency department visits and hospitalizations was higher after the third dose than after the second dose but waned over time. Priest Hangs Up Collar After Thousands of Baptisms Deemed Invalid Because He Said One Wrong Word
A Catholic priest in Arizona has voluntarily resigned after it emerged that he had been bungling the religious ritual by a single word for more than 20 years. The Catholic Diocese of Phoenix announced that church leaders had found that Father Andres Arango’s use of the phrase “we baptize” rather than the singular “I baptize.” the strict wording mandated by the Vatican. had invalidated nearly every baptism he had ever performed. Arango said in a letter he “deeply” regretted the mistake. and confirmed that he would be stepping down from St. Gregory Parish’s pulpit in order to “dedicate my energy and full time ministry to help remedy this and heal those affected.” In a statement to The New York Times. the diocese’s bishop said that he didn’t believe Arango had meant “to harm the faithful or deprive them of the grace of baptism and the sacraments.” There was “no single clear answer” on the mangled phrasing’s cascade effect. such as how it might impact those incorrectly baptized and later married by the Church. the Phoenix diocese said. Ilhan Omar scolds journalists for promoting harassment of Canadian Freedom Convoy donors: 'Unconscionable'
Rep. Ilhan Omar. D Minn.. slammed journalists whose reporting on the data breach of donors to the Canadian Freedom Convoy is leading to the harassment of private citizens. Members of the media on both sides of the U.S. Canadian border have been sharing names and how much money they contributed to the truckers who've been protesting Canada's vaccine mandate. stemming from the recent hack of the crowdfunding website GiveSendGo. BILL MAHER ON CANADA'S ‘FREEDOM CONVOY’: THEY'RE ‘NOT WRONG’ TO BE ‘P ED OFF’ AT ELITES 'So. Here's The GiveSendGo Donor List..' Canadian radio personality Dean Bundell tweeted with an article that includes a Google spreadsheet of all the names and email addresses swept up in the breach. Both the CBC and Ottawa Citizen shared articles including information that stemmed from the breach. Washington Post investigative reporter Aaron Davis wrote a lengthy thread singling out the biggest donor and a map showing where the donations came from in the U.S. CANADA FREEDOM CONVOY: GIVESENDGO DEMANDS FBI TO PROBE HACKERS. ALLEGES ‘HIGHLY COORDINATED’ POLITICAL DOXING One Washington Post reporter was caught emailing one of the donors for a report and asking what 'motivated' them to contribute to the campaign. It is unknown if that Post reporter is Davis as their name was redacted from a screenshot shared by Breaking Points co host Saagar Enjeti. One of the viral tweets from the GiveSendGo hack came from Ottawa Citizen editor Alison Mah. who shared an article authored by reporter Blair Crawford about a café owner who was forced to shut down her business after receiving threats after her name appeared on the donor list. US SMALL DONORS HELP FUEL CANADIAN ‘FREEDOM CONVOY.’ GIVESENDGO CONFIRMS The tweet caught the attention of the Democratic 'Squad' member. Why Biden Should Pick a Scalia to Replace a Breyer
Antonin Scalia testifies on Capitol Hill in October 2011 before the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing: 'Considering the Role of Judges Under the Constitution of the United States.' | Evan Vucci/AP Photo Opinion by Aziz Huq 02/10/2022 11:30 AM EST Aziz Huq teaches law at the University of Chicago and is the author of The Collapse of Constitutional Remedies. Conventional wisdom holds that the next Supreme Court justice will barely move the needle. There is an ideologically solid. six vote conservative majority on the court that would not be altered by whomever President Joe Biden nominates to replace Justice Stephen Breyer. At the very most. with this view. a new justice might follow Justice Elena Kagan’s path of building “consensus through persuasion” behind the scenes. as the New York Times described it. Beyond personal charm and malleability. the story goes. a new justice would have pitifully few tools for shaping the law. This is a mistake. Justices don’t just exercise influence by wheeling and dealing behind the scenes. Even a jurist without the votes to win can make a mark and move the nation. The proof of this — and a model for a powerful Biden pick — is that least liberal of judicial icons. Antonin Scalia. Over a career that lasted more than three decades. the Reagan appointee demonstrated that a jurist does not need to command a majority of the court to...

Louisiana man jailed for 44 years on rape charges is freed as prosecutor dismisses charges after judge calls for new trial
(CNN)Vincent Simmons. a Louisiana man who fought for 44 years to overturn his conviction on attempted aggravated rape charges. has had the judgment vacated and the charges have been dismissed. according to his attorneys Justin Bonus and Malcolm Larvadain. 'He's a free man. He was released a couple of hours ago from Angola State Penitentiary.' Larvadain said Monday. A judge had ordered a new trial because exculpatory evidence had not been turned over to the original defense team. Larvadain said. In 1977. it took just minutes for a jury of 11 White men and one Black woman to convict Simmons. who is Black. for the attempted sexual assault of 14 year old twin sisters. 'God. God kept hope alive in me.' Simmons said as he walked Monday through the courthouse in Marksville. Louisiana. according to CNN affiliate KALB. 'God did this for me today.' Riddle said in a statement entered into the court record that despite believing there was 'sufficient evidence to find Vincent Simmons guilty.' he didn't want the victims 'to undergo the trauma of another trial' or be victimized again. Riddle said he will not appeal the judge's decision and asked to no longer prosecute Simmons. 'Just in case anyone has any doubt. no this is not a declaration of innocence at all.' he said. 'We attempted to free him months ago because he has served enough time. Let this case be put to bed and the victims free...

Federal judge rules Air Force officer does not have to receive Covid 19 vaccine
(CNN)A federal judge in Georgia ruled that an anonymous Air Force officer does not have to receive a Covid 19 vaccine. despite the military's vaccine mandate. because of her religious beliefs. The judge ordered a preliminary injunction preventing the Defense Department and the Air Force from enforcing the military's vaccine mandate on the anonymous officer. This is the first injunction that has blocked the military's vaccine mandate from being enforced on any individual active duty or reserve service member. the Thomas More Society. which is representing the officer. said in a release. In a separate federal case in Texas. a judge ruled that a group of Navy SEALs who claimed a religious exemption from the vaccine could not face adverse action from the Navy. The anonymous officer in the Georgia case said that the vaccine mandate violated her religious beliefs. She applied for a religious exemption in the fall of 2021 before the Air Force's vaccine deadline. but her request was denied. She appealed the decision. but her appeal was denied as well. She was given three days to decide if she would get the vaccine or apply for early retirement. She chose early retirement. according to court documents. The officer has been in the military for 25 years and is currently a member of the Air Force Reserves. the court documents state. 'What real interest can our military leaders have in furthering a requirement that violates the very document they swore to support and defend?' Self wrote in his order. 'All Americans. especially the Court. want our country to maintain a military force that is powerful enough to thoroughly destroy any enemy who dares to challenge it. However. we also want a military force strong enough to respect and protect its service members' constitutional and statutory religious rights.' Self wrote. 'This ruling ensures our armed services continue to accomplish both.' The Defense Department has said the military's vaccine mandate is essential to maintain readiness of US troops. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley said in his initial memo to service members when the mandate was put in place in August that the 'health and readiness of our force is critical to America's defense.' The Department of the Air Force is aware of the ruling and will abide by the court's order 'until the matter is legally resolved.' Air Force spokesperson Laurel Tingley told CNN in a statement. While the ruling only applies to the one officer who filed the lawsuit. the order in her favor could encourage other challenges to the mandate. The Air Force has granted 3.256 exemptions to the military vaccine mandate as of Monday. according to Department of the Air Force data. Ei

Throw the books at him: Trump’s business fortune begins to unravel
Never mind those 10 years of Donald Trump’s financial statements. says the longtime accountant to the former president and past. present and future chiseler. The documents purporting to show Trump’s great wealth are. according to the firm which prepared them. themselves worthless. Oh. and please find another bookkeeper. “You’re fired!.” the phrase which gave our local low rent real estate man cum hustler a false national reputation as a business genius (thank you. Jeff Zucker. for the “The Apprentice”) has now been used on Trump by Mazars. The New York branch of the international accountancy agency that Trump used when it called WeiserMazars and Weiser before that has disavowed the materials they prepared for Trump covering the time from July 1. 2010 through June 30. 2020. We know all this because state Attorney General Tish James. in gamely pursuing a civil case against The Trump Organization and trying to convince the judge to order the testimony of Donald. Don Jr. and Ivanka. submitted Mazars’ Feb. 9 kiss off letter to Trump to the court docket — and public view. It would be really nice if the public also got to see the suspect records that Mazars has repudiated. particularly Trump’s secret tax returns. James must have them. as does Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. since Trump lost his effort before the U.S. Supreme Court to withhold the files. The financial documents could be evidence. which would all come out in a future legal action. Longtime Trump financial shenanigans chronicler David Cay Johnston predicts that Bragg’s grand jury is eventually going to indict Trump for racketeering. Sounds like a good fit. Trump has spent decades running from the law. as taught to him by the detestable Roy Cohn. and he’s wriggled out of consequences many times before. But the law is patient. It will catch up with him. James and Bragg have the evidence and have the tools. Now they have to go wherever the evidence leads. which is almost surely nowhere good.

Louisville Mayoral Candidate Shot at in ‘Attempted Assassination.’ Officials Say
A Monday morning meeting with campaign staffers took a terrifying turn when a gunman walked into Louisville mayoral candidate Craig Greenberg’s office and opened fire. “When we greeted him. he pulled out a gun aimed directly at me. and began shooting.” Greenberg recalled at an afternoon news conference. A brave staffer managed to shut the door. and the group barricaded themselves inside while the shooter fled. he said. Miraculously. no one was harmed. “We are shaken. but safe.” the lawyer said. Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Erika Shields on Monday said a suspect is in custody after the shooting inside Greenberg’s office on the fourth floor of Butchertown Market. While the motive remains unclear. authorities said that early evidence suggests that the shooter “acted alone” and deliberately targeted the Democrat. Metro Council President David James called it “an attempted assassination.” A police spokesperson told The Daily Beast that Greenberg and his staff were uninjured—but a bullet did strike the back of Greenberg’s sweater. Greenberg refused to comment on whether he recognized the gunman. A police spokesperson said that a person of interest matching the suspect’s description “was identified and taken into custody shortly after the incident.” “I am blessed. My team is blessed.” the candidate added. “It was a surreal...

Don't panic if you got a scary IRS notice
Imagine having filed and paid your taxes last year. then months later you get a letter in the mail from the IRS saying you didn't. But if you got one. don't panic. There's a fair chance the IRS simply hasn't seen what you already sent in. That's because it's dealing with a mountain of returns and correspondence that has built up over the past two years. During that time. the agency was called on to deliver several rounds of economic impact payments and other financial Covid 19 relief. while trying to protect its own workforce from Covid. The good news is that you're not likely to get another notice for awhile. The IRS announced this week that it will temporarily suspend issuing more than a dozen different types of automated notices indicating balances due. unfiled returns and other deficiencies so that it can work through its pandemic induced backlog. [Here is the list of notices being suspended.] But the IRS is too busy at the moment to respond in a reasonable amount of time. Last year. the agency took an average of 199 days to process 6.2 million responses from filers to IRS proposed adjustments on their returns. according to the National Taxpayer Advocate. Tax preparer and enrolled agent Donna Byrne herself got a notice asserting she didn't pay enough payroll tax on behalf of an employee in 2019. even though she did. she said. 'It drives you nuts. because you know you did...
