Learn Shotokan Karate at Home – Basics, Practical Application and Follow Along Practice Session with Simple and Easy Steps to learn Kata 4.
THE TECHNIQUE:
To learn Katas (and Karate) the technique involves practicing blocks against strikes, throwing counter attacks, stances, feet movement along with body positions.
Blocks:
For Kata 4, two block are uses - Outside Block with a subsequent Inside Block which are used to defend strikes against upper body (chest and upwards) attacks.
Outside Block / Inside Block Technique: Stand straight and bring both of your arms in front of your chest forming “X” shape (your left arm under your right for left block and vice versa). Move your left arm outwards keeping the fist at shoulder height making a "V" shape with your arm bent at the elbow. The inner part of forearm is blocking the first strike to your upper body. At this point bring your right fist close to your left elbow to make an imaginary "L" shape. Then pull your right fist towards your rib cage and bring your left arm in front of your chest - outer part of your arm will block the second attack.
Stance Used:
Back stance is used for Kata 4. Bring your feet shoulder width apart, front toe pointing forward and back foot's toe positioned in a way that both heals are at right angle to each other. Both of the knees are bent with 75% weight/ balance on the back leg and foot and 25% on the front .
Kick/Punch:
For Kata 4 - Front Kick and a Lunge Punch is used as a counter attack.
Block- Punch Sequence/ Feet Movement:
For Kata 4 (and most of basics Katas) the block/punch sequences creates an imaginary capital letter “ I” on the ground – first set of block and subsequent first kick/ punch start from a person’s left side, the same sequence is repeated to the right and then to the front until you reach a pre-established end point (which is after three punches to the front). You then come backwards keeping the same sequences- to the left, right and then back to starting point again (completing capital “ I”).
The feet move in way that movements are elegant and effortless – feet not stomping on the floor. The foot which is behind comes off the floor by an inch or so and almost touches the ankle of the front foot before moving forward and landing under a person’s forward shoulder. The feet are writing an imaginary letter “C” – being written backwards on the floor with your toes.
Kata 4 Steps:
1- Outside/ Inside Block to the Left: Follow technique above for Inside/ Outside blocks to the left.
2- Front Kick/ Lunge Punch to the Left: Bring your back leg (right leg) knee high and kick to the front and then follow it up with a punch with the same side hand in front of your chest.
3- Inside/ Outside Block to the Right: Follow technique above for the blocks.
4- Front Kick/ Lunge Punch to the Right: Bring your back leg (left leg) knee high and kick to the front and then follow it up with a punch with the same side hand in front of your chest.
5- Inside/ Outside Block to the Front: Follow technique above for the blocks.
6- Front Kick/ Lunge Punch #1 to the Front: Bring your back leg (right leg) knee high and kick to the front and then follow it up with a punch with the same side hand in front of your chest.
7- Front Kick/ Lunge Punch #2 to the Front: Bring your back leg (left leg) knee high and kick to the front and then follow it up with a punch with the same side hand in front of your chest.
8- Front Kick/ Lunge Punch #3 to the Front: Bring your back leg (right leg) knee high and kick to the front and then follow it up with a punch with the same side hand in front of your chest.
This is middle point for Kata 3 and as you punch you emit a loud “KIAI”. At this point sequence of movements back to starting point commence.
9- Inside/ Outside Block to the Left: At this point your right arm is fully extended/ stretched in front of you, therefore bring your left arm under your right and bring your left foot towards your right leg and then move your body by pivoting on your right toe to the left side to throw an Outside/ Inside block to the left .
10- Front Kick/ Lunge Punch to the Left: Repeat step#2
11- Inside/ Outside Block to the Right: Repeat step#3
12- Front Kick/ Lunge Punch to the Right: Repeat step#4
13- Inside/ Outside Block to the Front: Repeat step#5

15- Front Kick/ Lunge Punch #2 to the Front: Repeat step#7
16- Front Kick/ Lunge Punch #3 to the Front: Repeat step#68
At this point you have come back to the starting point of Kata 4 and at this stage you emit loud “KIAI” as you punch. At this point repeat initial sequence of movements to end the Kata commence.
