Chitharal Jain Monuments (Marthandam, Tamil Nadu): ചിതറാൽ ജൈന ക്ഷേത്രം (Doj: 20.10.19) These are reminiscents of ancient Jain influence in southern Tamil Nadu. It is believed that during 9th century the Digambara sect Jains had an abode here at Chitharal, which, later in the 13th century was converted to Hindu temple. Chitharal Malaikovil is what it is locally called now. The monuments are maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. It is informed that no regular rituals are being performed in the the temple. However, on religious special days of Jains, Pooja is performed with prior approval. The gopura you see on top of the temple today had replaced the original one which is said to be destroyed by lightning.The natural pond in front of the temple is a scenic splendour amidst the rock and perennial throughout the year. One could see footprint like images in these rock which is, interestingly, believed to be that of Sita Devi.The entrance to the Monuments is through a rock frame that leads to the carved images of the Jain ascetics/ Tirthankaras including Mahavira, Padmavathi and Parsvanatha.Situated 50 kms from Trivandrum, this would be ideal spot to halt enroute your journey to Kanyakumari. The view from the top and the silence here is amazing. You can spend some time in silence in the lap of nature in the background of the foregone culture of a unique religion.
