The devil flees from Goodness
The devil didn't create the world while God's back was turned
He high-tailed it out of heaven once his head was duly spurned
He burst out from the center and from there the edge he soughtÂ
But the dregs at the bottom is where his resentment caught
Like shells along the shoreline, lies sifted from the truth
And washed up cold and bare and hard to haunt poor mortals' youth
And when their tongues were twisted, and their hearts like brittle stone
The devil laughed beside himself that he was not alone
But so far from the center, such a long way from the top
The devil couldnt find the line where Goodness seemed to stop
And though his forked tongue flicked, and he stomped with cloven feet
The mortals that he tricked could not take back the first defeat
And that is why the devil, though he dwell inside us all,
Cannot erase the Goodness the Creator came to call
To speak a world from nothing, to grow from ground to sky
The Creator laughs and shakes his head to watch the devil try.
