COMMENTS:
This recording captures Dire Straits at what for me is the career high point of their magical third album, Making Movies, playing what had to be a special show at the tiny, 500-capacity Roxy in West Hollywood. It's a captivating, intimate performance and boasts unique arrangements of some tracks along with less frequently played material like "Les Boys." This is the same underlying source recording that circulates as "Roxy Los Angeles 1980". But the circulating version is several generations downstream from this copy and suffers from many negative sonic artifacts and attempts to clean up what was likely a hissy, high-generation source. You'll find this edition materially clearer, full fidelity and ultimately much more listenable. Samples provided, including what the circulating version sounds like. The tapes we transferred fell into our hands somewhat accidentally, but have a provenance going back at least 20 years before a kind soul gave them to us a few months ago. Thanks to our mystery benefactor.

glasnostrd19 notes:
A nice performance featuring most of their 3rd album (all except "hand in hand" and "solid rock") a couple of songs cut in or out abruptly, but this is essentially a complete show (I think?) and a clear recording, from a lower generation tape source than has been previously circulated. this one seems to lack most or all the sonic issues present in the previously circulated version. I spliced in some applause sections where the recorder was shut off abruptly a couple of times after a song ended, but didn't have to do much else for this one. I wonder if "solid rock" wasn't played as a final encore here, since it is probably the most often played Dire Straits song after Sultans of Swing, and some of their shows from this era were a bit longer than this is, but what music is here is uninterrupted. "Lady Writer" is also conspicuously missing from this show, which became a regular in the set at this time, although apparently they just didn't play it in this show though. could be it was a bit shorter than usual show because it is a special club show. it wasn't long before this that they played lots of club shows, but by this time (even in later 1979), Dire Straits had become pretty big in the USA, and most of this tour was in theaters.
