Suspect Gets Shot After Running Toward Frederick Police Officer With a Knife

Frederick, Maryland — On Saturday, March 4, 2023, at approximately 6:20 p.m., three officers with the Frederick Police Department were dispatched to an apartment in the 1500 block of N. East Street to find a man with an open probation violation warrant who was believed to be at that location. When the officers arrived, the apartment’s resident denied that the man, 44-year-old Joseph Sherril was present, but allowed officers to come inside and search for him. Inside the apartment, one officer found Sherril hiding in a bedroom closet and armed with a knife. Officers began speaking with Sherril, giving him commands to “drop the knife,” while backing away from him into the apartment’s living room. Sherril then rapidly moved toward one of the officers with the knife held out in front of him. At that point, two of the officers discharged their firearms, striking Sherril. Officers called for EMS and performed CPR, and Sherril was later pronounced dead on scene. A knife was recovered near Sherril at the shooting scene. No officers were injured.

Las Cruces, New Mexico — Newly released body-camera footage shows a 12-year-old boy who led Doña Ana County sheriff's deputies on a pursuit and crashed in September 12, 2021. The Doña Ana Sheriff’s Office received three calls about a juvenile recklessly driving an SUV Sunday afternoon in the Las Alturas area of New Mexico. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle to no avail and a pursuit occurred through residential areas. The juvenile stopped in a parking lot, picked up three passengers ranging in age from 12-15. At one point during the chase, the vehicle stopped and the three boys exited the vehicle and the driver continued back through the motel parking lot then across the K-Mart parking lot. The chase eventually came to an end when the stolen SUV headed down a road in the wrong direction, colliding head-on with another vehicle.
The 12-year-old had ammunition for a 9mm handgun in his possession, which led to deputies finding a handgun that had been thrown out of the moving vehicle. As paramedics arrive, deputies began to question the 12-year-old who is seen on video crying the whole time. The boy told deputies it wasn’t his fault and claims the kids that were in the SUV forced him to drive. Officers then raced to get those kids into custody. The 12-year-old boy was not injured. Officials said the driver of the other vehicle involved in the head-on crash was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. There were children in the victim's car as well. The sheriff’s department says the 12-year-old was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on an outstanding warrant for conspiracy to commit burglary of a vehicle, in addition to aggravated fleeing of law enforcement and receiving or transferring a stolen motor vehicle.

Duncanville, Texas — On August 17, 2020 Duncanville Police Officers responded to a call of a child left alone in a vehicle in the 900 Block of Gemini Avenue in Duncanville. The officer arrived and located a Ford Explorer that had a child in a child safety seat located in the back seat behind the drivers’ seat. The officer could hear the child crying and observed the child sweating profusely and covered in vomit. The officer notified dispatch, requested a Duncanville Fire Department medic be dispatched as he attempted to enter the vehicle. The officer was forced to break out the front passenger window to enter the vehicle to retrieve the child. The child was removed from the vehicle and placed inside an airconditioned squad car until the medics arrived on location to evaluate the child. The child was approximately 1 year of age. The mother of the baby was identified and arrived on scene with the child’s grandmother, and two of the child’s older siblings. The incident was reported to Child Protective Services as well as to a Dallas County Grand Jury to determine if civil or criminal charges should be filed.

Charlotte, North Carolina - Two CMPD officers will not face charges for a March shooting that killed a man armed with shotgun that may have been experiencing a mental episode. District Attorney Andrew Murray released a 175 page report Thursday detailing his offices findings in the death of Iarsalov Mosiiuk. The release coincided with a previously scheduled hearing where Mosiiuk's family and social action group, Safe Coalition, requested the release of the body camera footage from the two officers involved. "We would like the full un-redacted copy of the body worn camera," said Lauren Newton, attorney for Mosiiuk's family. Mosiiuk's sister, Oleysa Tabaka sat behind her attorney in the courtroom. Tabaka has viewed the footage, but said it is important that is released to the public. "We'd like everyone to keep in mind that at the end of the day this was a mental health call, and if this is the way that mental health calls are handled, people will be afraid to call the police," said Newton. Tabaka said she called 911 for help after her brother threatened to kill himself and had gotten a hold of her fiance's gun.
According to the DA's report, Tabaka screamed at responding officers, “please don’t shoot him,” “don’t kill him,” “he’s just being crazy.” The investigation later determined the gun was loaded, but missing a bolt, rendering it inoperable. However, Michael Greene, the attorney representing Officer Brian Walsh, says his client had no choice but to fire what would be the fatal shot. "That gun doesn't have mental health issues, the person may have but he still has a firearm and if the family knew that my question would be why didn't they secure the weapon," he said. The DA's report included images from Officer Walsh's body cam. A person can be seen in the distance. Investigators say it was Mosiiuk with a long gun pointed at Walsh's partner, Officer Michael Dezenzo. 'He sees the deceased in an actual shooting position with the gun pointed towards his partner," said District Attorney Murray. "Him making sure that he neutralized the threat to protect his partner and the civilians and himself. A long gun that size would go through a vehicle quickly," he declared. The end of the criminal case, cleared the way for the release of the video to both the family and Safe Coalition.
CMPD says it will release the video also. "It there's no longer a pending investigation we will not object to release," said CMPD attorney Jessica Battle. Internal investigations are still pending. CMPD has not said if either responding officer received crisis intervention training to address mental health calls. However, Officer Dezenso's attorney, Daniel Roberts says his client, a 16-year veteran with CMPD is looking forward to continuing his career with the department. Roberts also says the video will show that Officer Walsh saved his client's life. "Mike Dezenso was very eager for the video being released so it could be shown what Officer Walsh did for him," he said. However, Mosiiuk's family says a call for help, didn't have to end like this. "Why this was handled the way it was when it was a mental health call to begin with," Newton declared.

Jefferson County, Colorado — On June 20, 2023, at approximately 10:57 AM, Colorado State Patrol Troopers responded to assist Otero County Deputies with a suspect fleeing from them, along Highway 50, in Otero County. The vehicle was reportedly called in as a "shots fired" call. In addition, the suspect was reported to have caused multiple crashes and attempted to cause head-on crashes with himself and other vehicles. Troopers were able to TVI (Tactical Vehicle Intervention) the vehicle and contact the suspect successfully.
During the arrest, the suspect gained access to the front of a fully marked Colorado State Patrol vehicle and fled. Agencies on the scene pursued the suspect in the stolen patrol vehicle and troopers deployed stop sticks further down Highway 50. After hitting the stop sticks, the suspect in the patrol vehicle lost control, crashed into the side of a stopped Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) parked on the side of Highway 50 and spun out, catching on fire. The suspect was extricated from the patrol vehicle and transported to an area hospital. The suspect later succumbed to injuries sustained at the time of the crash. The CMV driver was not injured. The suspect was identified as Anthony Alphonso Sanchez III.

Salt Lake police released body camera video from the two officers involved critical incident that took place at 170 North 1460 West on January 8, 2020. Officers attempted to stop a stolen vehicle. During the stop an officer fired his weapon and the driver, a 20-year-old male Tyler Keaton Webster, was struck. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Ventnor, New Jersey — The Attorney General’s Office released video recordings from officer body-worn cameras related to the shooting on Aug. 6, 2020 in Ventnor, N.J., in which police officers fatally shot Amir Johnson, 30, of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. The shooting remains under investigation by the Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability. However, the video recordings are being released pursuant to Attorney General Directive 2019-4, the “Independent Prosecutor Directive,” which governs use-of-force investigations in New Jersey and requires that such records, if requested, be released to the public once the initial phase of the investigation is substantially complete. Investigators met with relatives of Mr. Johnson to review the 911 audio recording and the video recordings from the body-worn cameras worn by three police officers.
According to the preliminary investigation, at approximately 4:16p.m., Ventnor and Atlantic City Police Department officers responded to a 911 call concerning a man behaving erratically in the vicinity of Wellington Avenue and West End Avenue. When the responding officers encountered the man, later identified as Amir Johnson, he was walking in and out of a marshy area along the roadway, while holding a broken glass bottle in his hand. The officers attempted to engage Mr. Johnson and offer him assistance, but he refused to comply with their commands, including repeated requests for him to drop the bottle. Instead, he continued to walk back and forth on the roadway, where officers had stopped traffic for safety reasons.
At approximately 4:30p.m., Mr. Johnson advanced on officers with the broken bottle in his hand and multiple officers fired their weapons, fatally wounding him. He was rushed by ambulance to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Atlantic City Campus, where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 6:00p.m. The Attorney General’s Office previously released the identity of the police officers who fired at Mr. Johnson. They are Officers Michael Arena, Pierluigi Mancuso, and Robert Scarborough of the Ventnor Police Department. The investigation is being conducted pursuant to a state law enacted in January 2019 (P.L.2019, c.1), which requires that the Attorney General’s Office conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody.

A Utah High Patrolman was hospitalized after a sliding car hit him from behind in Sardine Canyon on Sunday. Sergeant Cade Brenchley, a second generation trooper, was responding to multiple cars that had slid off the road in the canyon. The trooper was walking toward a stranded white car when he was hit from behind by a black runaway car that was sliding. When Brenchley was hit, video shows him launched into the air before landing beside the white car. After he was hit, several passersby stopped to render aid to the trooper and called for help, including the driver who hit him. Among the first responders to the scene were three of Brenchley’s cousins and a couple of childhood friends, he said. Brenchley said Tuesday that he remembers stepping out of his vehicle, ”and then I remember everything was black. It felt like a weird dream.“ He suffered four broken ribs, a broken shoulder blade and road rash on his face.
“It’s miraculous, though, that this is all I have, considering what we saw [on the video],” Brenchley said, sitting beside his wife and four children during a Tuesday news conference at Logan Regional Hospital, where he continues to recover. Brenchley, his family, his doctor and fellow UHP officials all spoke at the news conference. “This type of accident is always what we’re trying to prevent as troopers,” Brenchley said. He wept as he talked about the loss of his friend, Trooper Eric Ellsworth, who died after being hit by a car on the side of Interstate 15 in 2016. He said he feels lucky to be alive with his family. The area on Highway 89 where Brenchley was hit was “very slick, slushy. The roads were snow-covered,” he said. Cars should have been moving slower in that kind of weather, he added, but sometimes people are too focused on their destination. “We’ve got to pay attention to what’s going on around us,” Brenchley said. “When there’s snow on the road, you just need to check your ego and slow down, to be perfectly frank. Be patient. Be courteous.”
The video shows the car that hit him continue to slide forward in the slush, bump another car and spin around, at one point facing oncoming traffic. Brenchley said he holds “no ill will” toward the driver who hit him. The driver, a college-age woman, has apologized and come to visit him at the hospital, he said, and he thinks she’s learned to be more cautious. Brenchley is a second-generation trooper with 13 years of experience, including incidents where he delivered twins on the side of an interstate and helped save a burn victim in a car crash. He is in charge of UHP’s public information and education efforts in the northern Utah region and works with local high schools. He also coaches soccer in the community.
