Title: Acts of Nature
Author: Jonathon King
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Mystery
Description:From Publishers WeeklyFlorida, hurricanes and crime make a potent mix, as shown in Edgar-winner King's fifth entry in his Max Freeman PI series (_The Blue Edge of Midnight_, etc.). The vacation trip that Max and his cop girlfriend, Sherry Richards, take to his Everglades cabin and then to a friend's even more remote fishing camp turns into a struggle for survival when hurricane Simone shifts course unpredictably. A trio of unscrupulous thieves scavenging in the hurricane's wake and a pair of deadly security guards out to protect an illegal asset compound the danger. King vividly describes the hurricane's force and the different ways people respond to it. Sherry displays her grit and Max his ingenuity in a series of desperate gambles as the story builds to an explosive climax. This is a worthy addition to a Florida subgenre that includes Carl Hiaasen's Stormy Weather and Tim Dorsey's Hurricane Punch. (Aug.) br Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. FromStarred Review The latest entry in the Max Freeman series (King won an Edgar with the debut of cop-turned-recluse Freeman in 2002's Blue Eye of Midnight) is every bit as polished and absorbing as its four predecessors, and it trumps King's own standards for description with a stunning depiction of a hurricane and its aftermath. A longtime Philadelphia crime reporter, King knows cops well, and it shows in the hero he has crafted. Ex-cop Freeman has been holed up in a former research shack deep in the Florida Everglades, accepting some detective work from an old lawyer friend but mostly hiding himself away from his horror at having killed a 12-year-old boy in a robbery attempt. Each novel inches Freeman away from his grief and into life; King is both a master plotter and an able psychologist. In his latest, Freeman and his new love, a South Florida detective, are enjoying a break at Max's retreat when a hurricane rips apart the shack, nearly killing Freeman's girlfriend. This novel is more adventure-suspense tale than mystery, as the couple struggles to survive, first against the hurricane and then against the villains who flood into the Everglades. King juxtaposes Max's first-person narration with third-person accounts of criminals in a breathtaking series of survival moves. Gripping. Fletcher, Connie

Title: John Wayne _ The Man Behind the Myth
Author: Michael Munn
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Autobiography
Description:From Publishers WeeklyAccording to this congenial biography by film journalist Munn, movie legend Wayne (1907–1979) was a hard worker who held tight to his beliefs and what he thought he should show on screen. Waynes career did have its share of controversy (although he starred in cutthroat war films, Wayne didnt sign up for military service in WWII; he rejected communism, which made him the object of Stalinist threats; and the actors given name is still debated), and Munn deftly addresses those hullabaloos while providing an overview of the actors accomplishments. After playing football at USC, Wayne worked as a studio prop man, coming into early contact with director John Ford, who would direct Wayne in some of his most memorable performances, including 1952s The Quiet Man. Throughout their association, Ford treated Wayne erratically, disparaging his talents and lashing out at him for accepting a lead role from rival director Raoul Walsh (The Big Trail, 1930). Yet Ford and Wayne collaborated on 1939s Stagecoach, which gave birth to the serious western and the Ford-Wayne movie subgenre. Other highlights include Waynes emergence as a heavy in 1948s Red River and his ferocious performance in 1956s The Searchers. Munn portrays the actor in his personal life as a mans man, who sustained friendships with tough cohorts like stuntman Yakima Canutt but failed in romance. Although the book takes an odd turn toward the end, when Munn links Waynes patriotism and heroic persona to the heroic actions after September 11, overall, its a fine tribute. br Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Title: The Lincoln Lawyer
Author: Michael Connelly
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Fiction:Detective
Description:Amazon.com ReviewBest-selling author Michael Connelly, whose character-driven literary mysteries have earned him a wide following, breaks from the gate in the over-crowded field of legal thrillers and leaves every other contender from Grisham to Turow in the dust with this tightly plotted, brilliantly paced, impossible-to-put-down novel. Criminal defense attorney Mickey Hallers father was a legendary lawyer whose clients included gangster Mickey Cohen (in a nice twist, Cohens gun, given to Dad then bequeathed to his son, plays a key role in the plot). But Dad also passed on an important piece of advice thats especially relevant when Mickey takes the case of a wealthy Los Angeles realtor accused of attempted murder: The scariest client a lawyer will ever have is an innocent client. Because if you [screw] up and he goes to prison, itll scar you for life. Louis Roulet, Mickeys franchise client (so-called becaue hes able and willing to pay whatever his defense costs) seems to be the one his father warned him against, as well as being a few rungs higher on the socio-economic ladder than the drug dealers, homeboys, and motorcycle thugs who comprise Mickeys regular case load. But as the holes in Roulets story tear Mickeys theory of the case to shreds, his thoughts turn more to Jesus Menendez, a former client convicted of a similar crime whos now languishing in San Quentin. Connelly tellingly delineates the code of legal ethics Mickey lives by: It didnt matter...whether the defendant did it or not. What mattered was the evidence against him--the proof--and if and how it could be neutralized. My job was to bury the proof, to color the proof a shade of gray. Gray was the color of reasonable doubt. But by the time his client goes to trial, Mickeys feeling a few very reasonable doubts of his own. While Mickeys courtroom pyrotechnics dazzle, his behind-the-scenes machinations and manipulations are even more incendiary in this taut, gripping novel, which showcases all of Connellys literary gifts. Theres not an excess sentence or padded paragraph in it--what there is, happily, is a character who, like Harry Bosch, deserves a franchise series of his own. --Jane AdamsFrom Publishers WeeklyStarred Review. Veteran bestseller Connelly enters the crowded legal thriller field with flash and panache. Los Angeles criminal defense attorney Mickey Haller regularly represents lowlifes, but hes no slickster trolling for loopholes in the ethics laws. Hes haunted by how he mishandled the case of (probably innocent) Jesus Menendez, and, though twice divorced, hes on good terms with his ex-wives; one of them manages his office, and the other, an ambitious assistant DA, occasionally tumbles back into bed with him. When Mickey signs on to defend young real estate agent Louis Roulet against charges of assault, he cant help seeing dollar signs: Roulets imperious mother will spend any amount to prove her beloved sons innocence. But probing the details of the case, Mickey and private investigator Raul Levin dig up a far darker picture of Roulets personality and his past. Levins murder and a new connection to the Menendez case make Mickey wonder if hes in over his head, and his defense of Roulet becomes a question of morality as well as a test of his own survival. After Connelly spends the books first half involving the reader in Mickeys complex world, he thrusts his hero in the middle of two high-stakes duels, against the state and his own client, for heart-stopping twists and topflight storytelling.
