Diverted Neutral Current Demonstration - Normal, Open CNE, Current Circulation (Part 2)
A demonstration of diverted neutral current using a 12V AC test rig. This represents two adjacent properties with TN-C-S supplies via a CNE (combined neutral and earth) cable and a shared extraneous conductive part.
Demonstration includes: ► normal operation ► current sharing between the CNE and bonding conductors ► what happens with an open CNE in one property and not in the adjacent one ► the situation with more than two properties all connected to the same extraneous part.
In all cases, current can be found in the bonding conductors connected to shared metallic parts such as gas or water pipes.
Note that this demonstration uses a custom manufactured test rig which runs on an isolated 12 volt AC supply. Some of the items shown would be dangerous if done with 230V or a real electrical installation. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fen8ekrhlBI
A steel junction box from 1958 which was typically used for lighting circuits, with a single cable to each point all joined at a central location.
This one was removed intact from an installation and still contains the original rubber insulated cables.
Made by Hartley Electromotives Limited, this example is a Type B and dated 19 March 1958.

Two 60W lamps, one 240V, the other 110V.
Both are connected to a 240V supply.
The 110V lamp lasted for a total of 147 seconds.

An old type of fused 3 pin plug and socket. These were used in some areas of the UK as an alternative to the BS1363 rectangular pin type.
They are obsolete, not manufactured by anyone, and unlikely to be in use anywhere.
The main feature of these is the fuse forming one of the plug pins, resulting in the plug being much smaller than other fused types which have the fuse as a separate component inside the plug.
The example with twin fuses may have been intended for a supply with a centre earth, such as a 110 volt supply arranged 55-0-55.
Or it could be someone shoving random parts together for no reason at all.

Wylex fuseboxes with rewireable or cartridge fuses are very common in older properties. Plug in MCBs can be obtained for these, and are simple to install.
However doing so is a waste of money, since the MCB does not offer any additional protection compared with a fuse.
Both devices disconnect the power in the event of an overload or short circuit.
The only advantage of the MCB is that is is quicker to reset - but fuses should fail almost never, and if fuses require replacement often, there is some other problem which no replacement device will fix.
New consumer units will contain one or more RCDs, which will disconnect the power in the event of an earth fault, such as someone touching a live wire.
It is impossible to fit these into old fuseboxes like this.
It would be possible to add an RCD separately before such a fusebox, and there are some installations where this has been done. However adding an RCD in this way does not comply with BS7671, as in the event of a fault on any of the circuits, the entire installation will be disconnected and will remain that way until the fault is located and repaired.
