Teaching TV journalism in an era of media mistrust and online opportunity
#FakeNews #MainstreamMedia #Trust As distrust with mainstream news outlets continues to grow, and online opportunities offer journalists the ability to leave corporate media for independent work, journalism teachers are navigating a rapidly changing environment in order to prepare their students. A high school journalism teacher joins me for a livestream to talk about what it's like instructing the next generation of journalists in an era of increased distrust in mainstream media. We will also discuss the opportunity afforded students to work independently online with a direct-to-consumer model and how that changes the nature of journalism. Bill Dorris, a former local news journalist, will also join us.
We are officially welders! OK, not really, but we now own a Lincoln Electric 180 MIG welder which we plan to use on our Airstream renovation frame repair as well as someday when we build our family homestead. This first project will support our gantry crane build with wheels so we can move it around when we are ready to hoist the shell off the frame. The last time my husband, Lynn, used a welder was more than 10 years ago as a Marine deployed to Afghanistan. I have never been around a welder and I was terrified to burn my eyes looking at the bright light it emits. However we were successful and the welds looked pretty dang good! The welder we bought was easy to use and did the job well.

#Farming #Food #money Alex Miller is a 7th generation farmer and heads Lick Skillet Farm, a regenerative farm in East Tennessee. He farms the land his grandfather bought 100 years ago. He gave a presentation at Wise Traditions about how food prices may be going up, but the average farmer is getting paid the same or less due to the corporatization of food. He has a top 3 "TO DO" list for consumers who want to save small farms.

My friend was dumped TWICE by text message. Turns out, this isn't rare. More and more, people are communicating through cell phones and that's caused a breakdown in our ability to have tough conversations. People are reduced to lines on a screen, whether it's on Facebook or Twitter or by text. It's hurting our basic day to day relationships that support healthy communities. My husband and I are moving off grid-ish as an antidote to this trend. We want real relationships with real people.

We ripped up the weird vinyl flooring in our Airstream and it is GONE to the dump! We found some rot underneath which means we'll continue with our original plan to replace the subfloor. Next up is removing the bathroom!

#Twitter #Media #Politics Tulsi Gabbard and Don Lemon signed exclusive deals to host shows on Twitter. Gabbard had a deal like it with Locals. Lemon all of a sudden wants conversations without "hall monitors" and is wearing a 1st Amendment t-shirt in his profile picture. #SeattlePolice #CarmenBestRetires #BlackLivesMatterProtests Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best is retiring from the department after the city council cut its budget along with her salary. Chief Best did not give too much information in her letter but said "it's time". Chief Best was in charge when the CHAZ/CHOP took over several blocks of the city, though she publicly said it was not her decision to remove police from the area's precinct. She also asked a court to force local news media to hand over photos and videos of a May 30th protest during which police vehicles were set on fire and guns were stolen. The news outlets are fighting back, using the state's shield law. As a former employee of KING in Seattle, one of the stations arguing it should not have to turn over raw footage to the police department, I am also concerned that this will set a precedent for blurring the lines between journalists and government.

#cancelculture #censorship #firedsocialmedia Can you sue if you're fired or kicked out of school for what you post on your private social media accounts? Multiple examples of such disciplinary action have arisen. Most recently, Fordham student Austin Tong found in violation of the student code of conduct and may be expelled for two Instagram posts, one about slain retired St. Louis Police Captain David Dorn and the other in which Tong is holding a rifle and references the Tiananmen Square massacre. In this video, Constitutional law expert Daniel Sheehan explains when you can and can't sue, how to take legal action, and when you're likely to win.
