DC and Puerto Rico. The 51st state and the 51st state. Wait.
No. Um, ignore what I just said. Neither DC nor Puerto Rico are the 51st state of these United States. But folks have floated both as potential additions, receiving celebrations from Civil Rights advocates, and boos from graphic design artists.
Puerto Rico got a lot of attention during the arrival and aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017. The handling of the disaster and rebuilding was seen as a national scandal. Generally, Puerto Rico tends to only make the news when there are presidential primaries, or when the issue of statehood comes up.
DC, on the other hand, is in a constant state of national attention, especially with all the media outlets there. The National Cathedral is often shown for funerals of notable political figures, and the monuments appear in an endless number of shows and movies. Outside of the National Mall is also a vibrant city, which is generally ignored in popular imagination.
Speaking of under-appreciated in the popular imagination, Puerto Rico is a gem often overlooked by Americans. Perhaps the reason why Washingtonians and Puerto Ricans are often overlooked? Well, they can’t vote…at least in federal elections anyway. But that could change soon IF
Both become states.

The 29th episode in a very long series about the American presidential elections from 1788 to the present. In 1900, the economy has made an amazing recovery and American is quickly becoming a superpower. William Jennings Bryan decides to challenge that anyway.
Feeling extra dorky? Then visit here:
http://www.countingthevotes.com/1900
The 29th Presidential election in American history took place on November 6, 1900, exactly 81 years before my birthday. Oh boy, we got ourselves another re-match!
During William McKinley’s first term, the United States by many accounts became much stronger. The economy was back to being awesome, and the country had joined the “Imperial Club.” That’s right, America was now officially imperialist country, thanks to becoming involved in the Spanish-American War. The United States easily defeated Spain, gaining its colonies Puerto Rico, Guam, the Philippines, and even Cuba for a little while. Sure, there were some shady sides to this war and its aftermath, like the Philippine-American War, which raged on. But Americans were feeling pretty darn good about themselves overall.
The war represented American entry into world affairs, actually acting out what the Monroe Doctrine promised 75 years prior. Since then, the United States has had a pretty consistent role in policing various conflicts all over the world.
Anyway, so McKinley was popular and easily renominated. However, his Vice President, Garret Hobart, had passed away, and McKinley needed a replacement to run with him. One name floating around was New York governor Theodore Roosevelt. He was the former Assistant Secretary of the Navy under McKinley, and a somewhat reckless war hero of the Spanish American War. Thomas C. Platt, the New York State Republican Party boss, hated Roosevelt and wanted him out of the state, so he pressured McKinley to agree to let him to be his running mate. Although Roosevelt wasn’t too excited about the possibility of becoming Vice President, he accepted the nomination anyway.
Early on, the Democrats were leaning toward nominating another Spanish American War hero, George Dewey, who was the Admiral of the Navy and from Vermont. Dewey made a fool out of himself, however, so that ultimately opened the door again to William Jennings Bryan, who still had a large force of passionate supporters. Adlai Stevenson was his running mate. Stevenson was the first former Vice President to win re-nomination for

New Jersey
November 8, 2011
Citizens vote to make betting on sports legal. This was a big deal. At the time, 97% of all sports bets placed in the country were illegal.
The New Jersey state legislature then passed and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed into law the Sports Wagering Act of 2012, which let citizens place sports bets at casinos and racetracks. Well the NCAA, NBA, NFL, NHL, and MLB were like “nuh-uhh.” They sued Governor Christie, arguing that New Jersey legalizing sports betting went against the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, aka PAPSA, passed by Congress back in 1992. This law banned betting on sports except for a few special places that were exempt. Well apparently New Jersey was not special enough.
Governor Christie was like “Yeah, I KNOW New Jersey legalizing sports betti

Lyrics:
Farmers got some cheap land
Bought it around the plains, they all had some big plans
(but) they over plowed all their fields
Took out all the topsoil, and deep-rooted grasses
Yeah, they thought the plow would bring rain
But rain never came, and this lasted for years
1930s, the wind picked up
And it darkened the sky, and it wouldn’t let up
All the citizens move away from the Plains
You better run, better run, outrun the dust
All the citizens move away from the Plains
You better run, better run, before the dust comes
All the citizens move away from the Plains
You better run, better run, outrun the dust
All the citizens move away from the Plains
You better run, better run, before the dust comes
The Dust Bowl made for dark days
It would it make seem late, in the middle of days
And it made the air hard to breathe
Could not escape Black Blizzards even going inside
And they would travel miles
You could see the Dust Bowl as far as New York City
Forced thousands to ‘bandon farms
The Okies left everything to head to California
All the citizens move away from the Plains
You better run, better run, outrun the dust
All the citizens move away from the Plains
You better run, better run, before the dust comes
All the citizens move away from the Plains
You better run, better run, outrun the dust
All the citizens move away from the Plains
You better run, better run, before the dust comes

#selfmade #selfhelp #history
As it turns out, being “self-made” is a uniquely American phrase.
It was on the Senate floor on February 2, 1842, that Henry Clay first coined the phrase “self-made man.” After that, folks began describing a “self-made man” as any person who achieved success independently, without any outside help.
But economic mobility, or the ability of people to move up or down the economic ladder in terms of their wealth, has been steadily declining in the United States for decades.

March 21, 1948
The American Broadcasting Company, or ABC, debuts a new radio game show called Stop the Music! Here’s how the show worked. Either an orchestra would play a popular song or two singers would hum a popular song, and the host, Bert Parks, would stop them by shouting “Stop the music!” This was Park’s signal that he had a contestant on the line whom he had called at random. This contestant was to guess the name of the song just played. If the contestant correctly guessed the name of the song, she or he won a prize, usually an expensive household appliance. If the contestant got the song wrong, the show chose a member of the studio audience to identify the song to win the prize.
Six weeks after the show debuted, a North Carolina contestant won a jackpot of $17,000, or more than $179,000 if they’d won today and you adjusted for inflation. The show was a hit, and other broadcasters took notice, starting their own prize giveaway shows. Later, Stop the Music! was turned into a TV show.
Not everyone was a fan. The National Association of Broadcasters accused these prize giveaway shows of “buying an audience.” The Federal Communications Commission, or FCC, (Eminem clip?) said the shows were breaking lottery laws and threatened to take away the license of any radio or TV station that aired them.
In response, ABC sued the FCC because the FCC wouldn’t let them be. The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York ruled in favor of ABC, and so the FCC appealed to the Supreme Court. Now this whole process took awhile. The Court didn’t hear arguments until February 1, 1954. This was the same group
