Well, this one is complete. I replaced the problematic ecc83 tube and the audio is back to normal.
An IF alignment was done, which improved things slightly.
Reception is also quite different to what we normally get from these radios. Because of the RF amplifier tube - the EF89 - at the front end, the sensitivity is way up. The sound is very rich, owing in part to the rather unique preamplifier section and dual output stages.
Overall, I enjoyed working on this radio, as it offered a few unique features that always make the job more interesting.

Stereo to Mono DIY cable to connect music player / iPhone to tube radio. A quick look at how to build a good stereo to mono converter cable, that is more than simply a Y-cable that is often suggested on the web. In most tube radios you can use the Pickup (gramophone) input to play your music player or iPhone through. These old radios usually produce very good sound, with some having an impressive array of speakers in beefy wooden cabinets that will fill your room with bass. The PU input lets you use them as an amplifier and speaker system in one, for your favourite music source. The challenge is that they normally have two sockets at the back for your input, one being the Signal (mono) and the other the Ground. Normal 4mm banana plugs usually fit so we need to doctor our cable a little. Sometimes you make plans, and reality just laughs at you. This is what happened to me on this stage of the restoration. What was meant to be a simple IF alignment on this AM-only radio, turned into a long frustrating search for the cause of oscillations that made the entire radio unusable. I got there in the end, but not after considering surrender on a few occasions. I also decided to do the alignment usual a sweep, so the result is much more interesting. In aligning FM radios, having a means of producing a stable, accurate and clean signal in the FM band of frequencies is very useful. This applies to both modern receivers and tube radios, but obviously more so in the former. I have been looking for (drooling over) a good solution for this, but the costs are usually higher than I can justify for the amount of use I'd be giving it. I came across the ELV website in my search, and was pleased to find this option, which seemed to tick all the boxes: It was small, modern, very accurate, and most of all, reasonably priced. Having received a full set of replacement tubes for this Philips model 148, I was confident that the next time I switched it on I would be listening to radio. That did not happen! I just couldn't understand why this thing was completely deaf. The obvious fault-finding path did not produce results, until I decided to go deeper. That's when I found a little guy with an attitude. Sometimes a restorer gets so confused with a part of the process that everyone watching just wants to shout into the screen to tell him what's so obvious to them, the viewers. I've experienced that many times, and feel it only fair to show you an example of me being on the other side of the process. The 'Mute' function on this radio drove me mad for almost an entire week. Admittedly, I was trying to avoid removing the board and even a particular chip, fearing that if I damaged it I would be in deeper trouble. However, the picture finally became clearer, so all's good.
