RYKER: Red Dirt Rykers Fall 2019 meetup - Day 2 - OKC to Tulsa on Route 66
This is day #2 of the Red Dirt Rykers meet-up ride, and we're taking Route 66 from Edmond to Tulsa today. This is a long video, so skip to the end of this description for clickable time indexes.
We met at Pop's in Arcadia before we headed out toward Tulsa. I hadn't been inside Pop's before, so I took a few pictures and looked around... it's a neat place! The ride on Route 66 was uneventful except for the terrible pavement quality that gave us a workout trying to dodge ripples and pavement seams for 2 hours. The Ryker is hard to ride over rough pavement because you can't dodge most of the road imperfections. There are 3 tracks to consider, and one wheel is almost ALWAYS going to hit the bumps.
We had a good ride today with a few minor incidents and road scares, but everyone made it through intact. Unfortunately, Nick's Ryker suffered a broken wheel nut about 2/3 through the day, so his bike had to be towed back home.

This clip is from Day 8 of the Cannonball when I ate gravel at 35 MPH! It was a slight downhill grade nearing a corner. A concrete wash at the bottom of the hill with loose, chunky gravel didn't agree with my scooter's front tire!
This 2015 Honda PCX150 has CBS (combined braking system), so it's impossible NOT to use the front brake. I preloaded the front brake lever in case I needed to use it, but I hadn't applied any pressure yet. I was only braking with one finger on the REAR brake, and that was enough to apply braking force to the FRONT brake as well... not good. CBS without ABS on the front wheel is a Bad Idea.
@zamdrang Tyler was following behind me when I munched gravel. He was quick to jump off of his Honda ADV150 and help me lift my scooter off of my legs. He assumed I would have been knocked out by the head bounce, but it wasn't so bad. This wasn't my first rodeo... I've been down hundreds of times in the dirt, so I've learned how to take a fall. ?
The damage to the scooter was primarily cosmetic, with several broken body panels and slightly bent handlebars. My right leg and knee took a beating, but (surprisingly) my left hand didn't get hamburgered even though I WASN'T wearing my glove... yet another Bad Idea. Two weeks later, the swelling has gone down, but my right thigh still hurts and is still yellow and brown until the bruising dissipates.
However, I don't consider this a motorcycle "accident" in the traditional sense. If you've been riding long enough, going down on dirt or gravel is inevitable on any motorcycle/scooter. The mistake here was taking a scooter with narrow street tires on gravel in the first place! At least I captured the fail on multiple cameras, and even in 360°... that video is coming soon! ??

Today is Tuesday, January 26, 2021, and I'm taking the Ryker for another work commute. I'm eager take the Ryker for ANOTHER laser alignment. Skip to the end of this description for clickable time indexes.
James Thorne at Thornoli's ( http://thornolis.com ) left me a message on YouTube this morning suggesting that I bring my Ryker back to him to see if he can exorcize my Ryker's demons. He mentioned that he has some new information regarding the Ryker alignments since I visited him back in 2019, so I'm cautiously optimistic that he can fix my bike.
So, I made an appointment with him for February 14th (Valentine's Day) to realign and test my beast. The Ryker will be parked until then because I'm completely fed up with the handling problems.
My other motorcycle projects and road trips are still on hold for a few more weeks until my work schedule opens up. The Yamaha XT250 will get some attention next so I can get it back on the road, and then the CT125 has a ton of accessories to install and review. So many projects, so little time... ??

One of the most common comments that I receive on my motorcycle videos is, "Why are you riding with your high beams on?!" Well, here's the answer!
Different countries have their own rules and regulations, but most states in the USA are very clear on the use of high beams during daylight hours. Motorcyclists are encouraged and trained to use their high beams for better conspicuity in traffic. This safety practice is taught by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) in their rider's courses, and it is also listed in many states' motorcycle operator training manuals.
Motorcycles have a smaller visual profile in traffic, and the headlight is typically not as bright as automotive equivalents. Using the high beam adds vital visibility in traffic so cagers can distinguish us from the rest of traffic. Auxiliary lighting such as driving lights or fog lights also aid in differentiating motorcycles from other vehicles. Anything that looks DIFFERENT or stands out is a Good Thing.
I live in Texas, and these points have been in our motorcycle operator's manual for decades. Here is a quick link to download a copy from the state website: https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/mot/pdf/TDLR%20Motorcycle%20Operators%20Manual.pdf . The current revision lists this point on page 30.
I've practiced this life-saving trick for decades riding all over the USA, and it has always been common-sense for all of the riders I've known. My father always rode his motorcycle with his high beams during daylight. When I was young, I distinctly remember asking him about it while we were riding together on a road trip. His answer was simple: "That's so all these crazy 4-wheelers and big rigs can SEE us, and maybe we can make it home for dinner!" Yep... well said! ??

We swapped the little Honda Cubs for bigger bikes at my warehouse, and then we went shopping for guns at Collector's Firearms today. We rode around to a few other places before heading back home for the evening.

I've been slowly accruing miles on the Rebel, and I'm nearly at the 1000-mile mark. I plan to do my owner's 1K mile review video with the top 5 likes and hates, along with some observations that any new or prospective buyers should consider when purchasing the new Rebel.
I will be taking two road trips later this month. The first will be out to the Texas Twisted Sisters again from April 23-25 on my Ryker to ride with several members of the Austin Ryker Riders group. Tom (Tripod) has secured a really nice cabin for us at the Frio Pecan Farms in Leakey, TX, so we'll be riding and living in style!
The second trip will be the last week of April into May with Adrian and Neil on the little bikes/scooters again to watch the sprint car races in Oklahoma (and maybe Missouri). We'll be motocamping that event as usual. Posh beds in a cabin or a sleeping pad in the dirt... doesn't matter to me, as long as I'm riding and sharing time with friends! ??
