These free instrument plugins, audio samples, and sound fonts will work with a variety of DAWs and are cross platform, meaning they can run on Windows, Linux, or Mac. I'm using LMMS on Linux in this video, and load the LV2 instrument plugins via Carla. Carla is also free and open source. Using LMMS on Windows, you would load these plugins (VST) using Vestige.
