Examining where we spend our time and energy will help us become more self-aware of how proactive we are. There are some things we really have no control over, and there are other things we can change. People that are proactive focus on the issues within their Circle of Influence that they can influence. beginning the process of becoming proactive: Make a commitment, and then keep it. Make a goal, then work towards achieving it. The essence of forming the fundamental habits of effectiveness is having the ability to make and keep promises to ourselves. Start by making modest commitments to others in your sphere of influence. Most of the time, we have a notion of where we want to go before we embark on a journey. Unfortunately, this is not the case for many firms. It's easy to get caught up in life's busyness and to push harder and harder to climb the ladder of success...only to find that it's leaning against the wrong wall, as Covey concisely states. It is possible to be busy yet not particularly productive. We must define the goals of our business clearly if we want to have a successful one. In order to achieve this goal, we first develop the product we wish to offer, pinpoint our target market, and then set up finance, R&D, operations, and marketing. Whether or not we succeed will depend on how well we have the end in mind. If we don't exercise that control, other individuals and external factors such as circumstances will determine our future. Only an organisation where Win/Win is ingrained will allow it to endure. We are the biggest losers if we advocate for Win/Win but only reward Win/Lose. The planning system, communication system, budgeting system, information system, compensation system, etc. must all be founded on the Win/Win principle for it to be effective. Decide on a partnership where you can create a win-win arrangement. We must put ourselves in their position and then write down how we believe they would approach the problem. Next, make a list of the outcomes that, in our own eyes, would represent a victory. Will it fit? Ask the other individual what they think by approaching them. Is it a sufficient first compromise? Seeking to understand before seeking to be understood is the secret to successful interpersonal communication. When someone else speaks, Covey asserts that we listen at one of four levels: we can be ignoring them or not listening at all. We could test out fake listening. We might engage in selective listening, picking in on only some of the conversation. We can even work on active listening, which involves paying attention and concentrating our energy on the speaker's words. However, very few of us ever engage in empathic listening, the highest level of hearing and listening with the intention to understand. Create a personal mission statement that focuses on what we want to be and do, as well as the values or principles that underlie being and doing, according to Covey, as an effective way to start with the end in mind.
