http://bit.ly/1tPwL1uAnyone who has seen my longplay of the Binary Design version of the original Double Dragon on the C64 will know that it's probably one of the worst games of all time.
What we have here is a conversion of Double Dragon II for the C64 and, it has to be said, it is a far superior effort when compared to the original.
As far as the plot is concerned, Billy Lee's girlfriend, Marian, has been murdered by the evil Shadow Boss, Willy, who you defeated at the end of the original game. Billy and his brother, Jimmy, are now out on a mission for revenge (and somehow manage to resurrect Marian in the process).
Firstly, a lot more of the arcade content made it into this version. Most of the fighting moves are present, as are enemy designs and levels; you really can't fault the game for trying to be faithful to the original.
What's more, the sprite collision detection is pretty solid, so you can easily hit your opponents without any weirdness that seems to haunt many 8bit beat 'em ups.
Dave Lowe's musical score keeps the action moving along and fits in well enough with the game. It should be noted that you also get sound and music simultaneously in this game, which was not a common occurrence and is to be commended. Interestingly, there are also a couple of digitally sampled voices and sound effects, such as the gong sound effect as you start level 4.
You might think then, that this is a really good game. Well, it starts out well enough, but the game really starts to drag once you reach level 3, with a seemingly endless stream of bad guys spawning whenever you manage to down one of their compatriots. By the final level I really had started to lose the will to live and just wanted the whole thing to be over.
The major problem I found with the game, though, was the fact that it's impossible to chain attacks together. The enemies attack speed is noticeably faster than your own, so if you hit an opponent, they will hit you back before you can ready another attack. The only real tactics you can use to avoid this are to either hit and move away, or hit and immediately perform a jump kick as you seem to be invincible once the jump animation starts.
It's a real shame that these things mar an otherwise decent game, although it's still a damned sight better than the original!
Enjoy!
