Winnipeg, Canada, October 12, 2013: Thousands gathered at the intersection of Portage and Main Street to welcome the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Professor James Anaya with a Jingle Dance. Speaking in this clip are Jo Redsky and Michael Champagne, activists in Canada's Idle No More movement.
Among the many issues outstanding between the First Nations and the Government of Canada is the refusal of the federal government to hold a national inquiry into the documented deaths or disappearances of over 600 aboriginal women in Canada. Stephen Harper has been distinctly cool towards the visit of the UN Special Rapporteur, but until the Canadian government takes serious steps to address the needs of Canada's First Nations they will continue to seek support in the international arena.

On Friday, August 6th, Winnipeggers joined in a Lanterns for Peace Ceremony to mark the 76th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These ceremonies are held each year to help keep alive the memory of these attacks so that current generations understand we must never allow nuclear weapons to be used again.
This year, the focus is on the role of youth in the global campaign for nuclear weapons abolition, with speeches from the young activists responsible for convincing Winnipeg City Council to support the United Nations nuclear weapons ban.
Speakers will included Avinashpall Singh and Rooj Ali who, in June, succeeded in persuading the City of Winnipeg to support the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons as part of the youth-led International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons Cities Appeal.
Winnipeg is now one of 15 Canadian cities to support the ban. Thus far, 86 countries have signed the treaty; Canada’s federal government refuses to support it.

Conservative MP Joyce Bateman (Winnipeg South Centre) has a choice: stand up for the democratic rights of her constituents - and all Canadians - or vote for Bill C-38 - a draconian bill that includes a budget which cuts a wide range of necessary services with amendments to over 70 existing laws. By cramming all of these changes into an omnibus bill and rushing it through Parliament's Finance Committee, Harper is preventing MPs from examining and debating these measures in detail. Once again Harper is doing an end-run around Parliament and showing his contempt for democracy.
If you live in Winnipeg South Centre, you may wish to remind Joyce Bateman that her job is to stand up for her constituent's democratic rights. Contact her at

Winnipeg, August 21, 2015: Activists marched to mark the first anniversary of the murder of 15-year-old Tina Fontaine in August, 2014 after she went missing from the care of Child and Family Services.
No arrests have been made since Tina's body was pulled from the Red River and four more indigenous women have been killed in Winnipeg since her death.
Tina’s case prompted yet more calls for a national inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women and girls — something Conservative leader Stephen Harper has so far rejected.
Tina's case must not become lost in the statistics of the 1,200 indigenous women and girls who have been murdered or disappeared over the past three decades. There must be justice for the Fontaine family and for all the families of the missing and murdered indigenous women and girls.
