In this video I describe Diana Baumrind's 3 main parenting styles: authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative. I also describe the addition of neglectful or uninvolved parenting and the outcomes in children associated with each of these parenting styles. Lastly I consider the difficulty of drawing specific conclusions from these outcomes, as children's personalities and behaviors may influence parenting styles and parents and children may share genes related to social competence.

In this video I discuss some ways that drugs can influence the functioning of neurotransmitters by binding to receptors on postsynaptic neurons. I explain the difference between agonist drugs which increase effects of a neurotransmitter and antagonist drugs which reduce the effects of the neurotransmitter. I explain how nicotine acts as an agonist for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and how neuroadaptation relates to addiction. Next I explain how caffeine acts an an antagonist for the neurotransmitter adenosine and how this relates to the familiar "crash" that people experience after using caffeine.

In this video I provide some guidelines for choosing class intervals when creating a frequency distribution. These include using simple whole numbers, starting each interval with a multiple of the class interval, and avoiding any gaps or overlaps, even if there are gaps in the sample.

In this video I cover descriptive statistics and three measures of central tendency; the mean, median, and mode. The calculation of each is explained, as well as potential problems, such as the mean's sensitivity to extreme scores, especially in small samples. I also discuss the possibility of multimodal and uniform distributions.

*I should clarify the example of a multimodal distribution that I used, the scores of 90 and 84 should be out of a larger group of students (more than 10) with other scores also occurring. If 90 and 84 were both the most-frequent scores then they would both be modes. If 90 and 84 were the only scores and they occurred equally then this would be a uniform distribution. Sorry for any confusion!

In this video I explain the difference between histograms and bar charts, look at the creation of histograms and frequency polygons for continuous variables, and then discuss why we want to get a sense of the shape of a distribution of scores in order to compare it to a known distribution such as a normal distribution.

In this video I describe how hunger is turned on (the orexigenic signal) and off (the anorexigenic signal) and how hormones and other cues influence motivation to eat. The lateral hypothalamus is involved in turning on hunger, while the ventromedial hypothalamus is involved in signaling satiety. Other hormones such as ghrelin, leptin, and insulin also influence motivation to eat, in addition to other cues like visual stimuli.
