Most of us know at least one young adult who’s having trouble making that transition from dependent teenager to 20-year-old adult paying their own bills and pursuing their own goals.
This is Dr. Randy Paterson’s area of expertise, and today he shares helpful insights.
Press play to learn:
1. Why males seem to have a harder time leaving home or “launching” than females
2. Whether the “failure to launch” phenomenon in young adults happens primarily in the U.S., or in cultures across the globe
3. The strange dynamic that exists between the parents of young adults who fail to launch, and the therapist’s role in navigating this dynamic
4. How the idea of “following your passions” can actually be paralyzing for many young people
Dr. Paterson has been a psychotherapist for nearly 40 years, is the author of How to Be Miserable in Your Twenties, and currently serves as the director of Changeways Clinic.
Throughout his career, he’s noticed a subset of his client population that struggles to achieve adult independence, even into their twenties. In the U.S., you might know this as a “failure to thrive,” which generally means that the young adult is not employed (or grossly underemployed), not in school, and not even engaging in much of a social life.
Dr. Paterson sees this in young males far more than females, and he discusses why that might be. He also explains that the longer this failure to launch lasts, the more entrenched the young adult becomes in this state, and the harder they find it to gain independence.
Tune in to learn how Dr. Paterson helps young adults—and their families—make the critical transition into adulthood.

How Parents Can Influence Mental Health Issues
Did you see your parents going through a depressive episode as a child? If so, read on. ?
In this video, US Army Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Glenn Schiraldi, who is now at the University of Maryland School of Public Health, running the Resilience Training International website resiliencefirst.com, talks about how early exposure to mental health issues can influence children and adults.
He explains that parents can actually TRANSMIT mental health problems to their children in various ways.
Mental health issues may be transmitted through genes via the epigenome, Glenn shares.?
However, in most cases, children simply learn how to be depressed when they see their parents having a depressive episode. ?
What are your thoughts about how parents can transmit mental health problems to their children? Let us know in the comments below.

Are you getting your money’s worth from the collagen products in the market?
Certified nutrition specialist and personal trainer Sarah Bowmar reveals the unsightly truth behind collagen products in this video.
According to Sarah, a person should be getting at least 15 grams of collagen per day in order for them to see results. However, most companies churning out “collagen-rich” products only contain about two to three grams of collagen, which, she shares, won’t do much of a difference. ??

Science has proof on why saying sorry is so hard!
In this video, Marjorie Ingall and Susan McCarthy, the authors of Sorry, Sorry, Sorry: The Case for Good Apologies, explain why nearly everyone struggles to say sorry.
The author duo explain that our brains are wired to see ourselves as the HERO of our own story, and so when we are confronted with the fact that we have done something wrong, our brains will try to make excuses or find ways to avoid accountability. ?♂️
This is what makes the act of making a sincere apology a brave act, as it shows that we are willing to learn from our mistakes and build trust with others. ?

After Dr. Myles Spar noticed that women far outnumbered men as integrative medicine patients, he worked to reframe the messaging.
In this podcast, he discusses
1. Why integrative medicine provides key preventative health and wellness information often absent from internal medicine practices,
2. What are three main hormones in men that are important to address and why, and
3. How he approaches sex, body, and brains issues in men to help them achieve their health goals.
Dr. Myles Spar is the Chief Medical Officer of Vault Health and specializes in men's health and wellness. He serves as a clinical faculty member at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Arizona Schools of Medicine. His volunteer time with Doctors Without Borders encouraged him to pursue integrative medicine fully on his return.
He starts by explaining how earlier experiences led him to question the messaging men receive to not seek help. This along with his own observations of the scarcity of men as patients seeking health and wellness information from various types of integrative medicine practices encouraged him to provide messaging more adaptive to men's needs.
He tells listeners about health considerations and centers this discussion on hormones. He explains that testosterone is the main one listeners may be familiar with but adds that there are many more male hormones to consider like DHEA and estradiol.
Dr. Spar also describes his initial approach with patients, how he starts by developing an understanding of what's important to that patient in terms of health goals and motivations. In other words, he learns what patients want their health to achieve for them, or alternatively, what is their ill health getting in the way of.
He divides these issues by sex, body, or brain and proceeds to evaluate based on those goals. He also discusses levels of testosterone and the nuances behind the numbers as well as different types of testosterone treatments from pellets to pills to other means and advantages and disadvantages for each.

Director of Pediatric Rheumatology at UAB Hospital, Dr. Randy Cron, joins the show to discuss his work and research as a physician-scientist. In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. What rheumatology is and how rheumatic diseases work
2. How often chronic arthritis occurs in children
3. How macrophage activation syndrome (a type of cytokine storm) may explain why some people become severely ill or die from COVID-19
Dr. Randy Cron holds an MD and a PhD in immunology. As a physician-scientist, he sees both sides of the coin: the research and the clinical medicine it informs.
Dr. Cron primarily sees patients in the field of pediatric rheumatology and is currently studying macrophage activation syndrome, which is a potentially life-threatening type of cytokine storm syndrome that is a complication of some rheumatic diseases and infections—including COVID-19.
Dr. Cron aims to study the genetics behind this syndrome in order to identify patients who are predisposed to developing it, and to learn more about the pathophysiology of the syndrome in order to improve treatments.
He also explains the basics of certain rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and touches on a number of other interesting topics.
Tune in to learn more.
