Each volume has a similar format an introduction includes a history of the culture(s), an explanation of the book, and a pronunciation guide, followed by a time line and a map. The main text is an alphabetical listing of names, places, and ideas important to the mythology of the culture. The definitions are mostly brief--a single paragraph--although some are as lengthy as a page. Many black-and-white illustrations, mostly of artifacts, enhance the text. Each volume includes a good bibliography with Internet addresses. The series is designed for young people in junior high and high school, and it is appropriate for younger children who are better readers or interested in mythology. Except in the Celtic volume there is not much storytelling since the volumes are intended to be encyclopedias rather than collections of stories. They will help students to make connections between mythological characters and images and compare similarities between cultures. The indexes are constructed to help make those connections, too. Multiculturalism and world history are an integral part of most school curricula, and this series fits both of these themes.Although the pronunciation guides in the introductions are excellent, a young audience also needs pronunciations at appropriate entry headings. It is difficult to remember strange pronunciations or to flip to the front of the book to figure out how to say foreign names. It seem a disservice to the Native American, Meso-American, and African cultures to lump so many of their mythologies into such a few pages. Another disservice is the use of some English translations as main entries in the Native American volume, with see references from the Native American terms. Although this is explained in the introduction, it reinforces attitudes of cultural superiority. That being said, these titles are an excellent introduction to the mythologies of these cultures and should be in most public and school libraries. Robin Hoelle American Library Association. lt

In todays world of unequal globalization, Bangladesh has drawn international attention for the spate of factory disasters that have taken the lives of numerous garment workers, mostly young women. The contemporary garment industryand the labor organizing pushing backdraws on a long history of gendered labor division and exploitation in East Bengal, the historical antecedent of Bangladesh. Yet despite the centrality of womens labor to anticolonial protest and postcolonial state-building, historiography has struggled with what appears to be its absence from the archive.Poulomi Saha offers an innovative account of womens political labor in East Bengal over more than a century, one that suggests new ways to think about textiles and the gendered labors of their making. An Empire of Touch argues that women have articulatedin writing, in political action, in stitchingtheir own desires in their own terms. They produce narratives beyond womens empowerment and independence as global and national projects they refuse critical pronouncements of their own subjugation. Saha follows the historical traces of how women have claimed their own labor, contending that their political commitments are captured in the material objects of their manufacture. This volume is intended to demonstrate how opposition to the war in Vietnam, the military-industrial complex, and the national security state crystallized in a variety of different and often divergent political traditions. Indeed, for many of the figures discussed, dissent was a decidedly conservative act in that they felt that the war threatened traditional values, mores, and institutions, even though their definitions of what was sacred differed profoundly. To an extent many of the dissenters treated in this volume were at one time Cold War liberals. During the course of the Vietnam War, they came to see the foreign policy which they were supporting, with its willingness to invoke the democratic ideal and at the same time tolerate dictatorships in the cause of anticommunism, as morally and politically corrupt. Most dissenters increasingly came to perceive cold war liberalism as a radical departure that threatened the fundamental ideals of the republic.

p MsoNormalReading Prophets of Rage reminds one of the debt historians of African American urban history owe Allan H. Spears classic Black Chicago The Making of a Negro Ghetto (1967), one of the finest studies of the development of an inner city up to that time. Unfortunately, in many ways much of African American urban history has not yet gone beyond this groundbreaking work. p MsoNormalAlthough Daniel Crowe is writing about the San Francisco Bay area, starting with the World War II migration and its aftermath and including the civil rights and Black Power eras, his book is very similar in structure and analysis to Spears. Crowes description of the effects of the World War II migration on the Bay Area reads remarkably like black Chicago during World War I the supposed fluidity of race relations before the migration the old settlers initially rejecting the newcomers the newcomers having to face intra- and intergroup hostility and continued racial discrimination leading inevitably to an uprising. p MsoNormalThere are important differences, however. As Crowe notes, unlike the situation in Chicago, there is another player in the racial dynamics of the Bay Area, the federal government. Crowe does demonstrate that, in the San Francisco Bay Area, the federal anti-poverty programs bore the fruit of black radicalism. He recounts how the Community Action Programs did empower the powerless and thus why these programs had to be dismantled. But the lessons learned in organizing, planning, and mobilizing would not be forgotten. Crowe then describes how most of the mainstream civil rights organizations failed the community, prompting a more radical response from the second generation of black migrants in the form of the Black Panther party its platform and principles were written by Bobby Seale and Huey Newton in the offices of the North Oakland Neighborhood Anti-Poverty Center. p MsoNormalCrowes study is a good rendering of an important chapter in African American life in the Bay Area. He had set a more ambitious goal for himself than just this story of struggle, however. In his introduction, Crowe assesses the recent scholarship on African American urban history and notes that it pays particular attention to the lives of the black migrants themselves, rather than to the structural formation of institutionalized ghettos in large inner cities. Unfortunately, Crowe concentrates on the institutions that structured the lives of the Bay Areas black community at the expense of the lives themselves. There is very little discussion of class differences, a heavy reliance on organizational histories, and a dearth of information on the lives of the majority of the African American community in the Bay Areawomen. The grandmothers of the radicals and activists migrated to the Bay Area in quest of a better life. Were they able to achieve it? Were the struggles of these women to make a better life for themselves, their families, and their communities lessons not learned by anyone? The 1960s were a time of great change around the world. Was the community, including the activists, motivated by these examples of struggle? If Crowe had attempted to answer some of these questions, he would have come closer to achieving his goal of a new African American urban history. While Crowe has given us the structure of the story of the black struggle in the Bay Area from 1945 to 1969, we must still await a study that pays particular attention to the lives of the black migrants themselves.font face=Segoe UI, serif size=2fontp MsoNormal-- Review by Kenneth W. With Endgame, published two years after Fischers death, Bradys on-and-off proximity to Fischer lends new depth to the latters full and twisted life story. Though Fischers pinnacle artistry on the chessboard may often be discussed in the same breath with his eventual paranoia and outspoken anti-Semitism, the particular turns and travels of his post-World Championship years (half his life) lend his story most of its vexing oddity the niggling insistence on seemingly arbitrary conditions for his matches, the years on the lam after flagrantly disregarding U.S. economic sanctions, his incarceration in Japan, his eventual citizenship and quiet demise in Iceland. Poor Bobby was blessed and cursed by his genius, and his story has the arc of a Greek tragedy---with a grim touch of mad King Lear at the end.The brain power and concentrated days and nights Bobby spent studying the game left much of him undeveloped, unable to join conversations on other subjects. Later in his life, unhappy with his limited knowledge of things beyond the chess board, he compensated with massive study---applying that same hard-butt dedication to other fields politics, classics, religion, philosophy and more. He found a hide-away nook in a Reykjavic bookstore---barred from his homeland, Iceland had welcomed him back---where he read in marathon sessions. (After he was recognized, he never went back to his cozy cul de sac.)In Bradys telling the high drama of the Spassky match quickens the pulse the contest that made America a chess-crazed land was seen by more people than the Superbowl. People skipped school and played sick in vast numbers, glued to watching Shelby Lyman explain what was happening. The fanaticism was worldwide. The match was seen as a Cold War event, with the time out of mind chess-ruling Russian bear vanquished.Arguably the best known man on the planet at his triumphant peak, Bobby is later seen in this account riding buses in Los Angeles, able to pay his rent in a dump of an apartment only because his mother sent him her social-security checks. The details of all this are stranger than fiction, as is nearly everything in the life of this much-rewarded, much-tortured genius.I liked him immensely, knowing only the tall, broad-shouldered, athletically strong and handsome six-foot-something articulate and yes, witty, youth that Bobby was before the evil times set in, with deranged anti-Semitic outbursts and other mental strangeness preceding his too early end at age 64.I cant ever forget the moment on the show when in amiable conversation I asked him what, in chess, corresponded to the thrill in another sort of event like, say, hitting a homer in baseball. He said it was the moment when you break the other guys ego. There was a shocked murmur from the audience and the quote went around the world.Frank Bradys Endgame is one of those books that makes you want your dinner guests to go the hell home so you can get back to it.FromBradys insightful biography of the legendary chess player focuses more on Fischers life as a chess champion than on his much-publicized legal troubles and alleged psychological breakdowns. Brady first became friends with Fischer at a chess tournament when they were both children, and he combines a traditional biography with a personal memoir. Fischer began playing chess at age six and was soon playing games by himself, unable to find worthy competition. He seems to have had a lifelong battle with himself, and his biggest challenge may have been conquering not his competitors but his own intellect. Brady is uniquely qualified to write this book. Not only is he a seasoned biographer and someone who knew Fischer on a personal level hes also an accomplished chess player himself, able to convey the games intricacies to the reader in a clear, uncomplicated manner. The book should appeal to a broad audience, from hard-core chess fans to casual players to those who are simply interested in what is a compelling personal story. --David Pitt
