Importing clips FCPX
In the latest version of Final Cut Pro 10 there have been some overall improvements and in particular Apple have made it's better for importing clips into your Final Cut Pro application. Whereas my workflow before was to bring in the whole of a clip, now what I can do is to select the parts of a clip that I want to bring in and they arrive into the clips bin in Final Cut as separate items.
To select the first clip you use the I key and you can use the O key to select your in points and out points. Then you can use command shift and I and command shift and O to select further areas of clip within the overall video clip. It certainly can be quite handy to have each of these clips separated within the Final Cut Pro app, but it is still possible to use the previous workflow still if you want to bring in the whole of the clip.

## Auto Schedule
In the previous video I show that you could do the auto schedule by selecting the items you wanted to schedule first of all. It’s also possible to schedule everything for the day without making a selection first. In the top right-hand corner there is an icon of three grey dots. This brings up a menu allowing you to do some filtering of the list and also to auto schedule.
I noticed that if you have an event in the schedule for the day with a time already set the auto schedule will take that into account and put the tasks not already scheduled before and after that. You don’t need to worry that the auto schedule is going to mess things up you have already have on your calendar.
## filtering your schedule
If you have a lot of tasks on your schedule for the day from various projects you might want to just look at specific areas of work. Use the same menu again to access to filtering by list or by tag. When using the filter you can have it show whatever is in just one list or you can choose multiple lists.
It’s also possible to filter by both lists and tags. So if you want to see something which is on a specific list which also has a specific tag, you can do it.
## The Reorganise Feature
You may have made notes within a task and later decide you want to break them up into separate tasks. In the pro version of the application there is an option to reorganise items from within the note to make them tasks. With the note open used the button in the bottom right-hand corner of the note with three dots. There you’re given the option to either duplicate or to reorganise.
Choose reorganise and a panel pops up from below. You’ll see there are little icons with three lines to the left of the items in the list that you can move.
Drag-and-drop the first item you want to make into a task onto one of the boxes below. To make a separate task dragged the next item into the box showing to the right. If you drag another item on to the same box it goes into the new task as a note. Tap on done when you moved everything you want to move and you’ll see the new tasks added to the bottom of your schedule. The new tasks are added to the inbox.

In the video I talk about getting my hands on some open data for electric vehicle chargers in Barcelona. I downloaded a spreadsheet which I was able to put into Numbers on my Mac. I used some Numbers kung fu to sort and to filter the data into something usable. I now have to spreadsheet files with information on one about the CHAdeMO connector charges. The other one gives me a list of the Mennekes Type II connections. I plan to visit Barcelona just for the sake of going to some public rapid chargers. I want to test if I can use the electric vehicle charge card I got from the Girona Ajuntament. As well as having this information for myself so I know where to go when I need to plug-in for some electrons, I’ll pass information on to other electric vehicle users. I can do this with the application called PlugShare. The information within the application is crowd sourced. Going by the information in the databases I have been working with I have added information to PlugShare about which charges use the RFID card. On the spreadsheet there are also a list of charges which are listed as free. These don’t have any information about which network, which cards to use or which applications you might need.
I have a problem with the radar sensor at the front of the car. The car was booked in for 25 June to get the radar sensor changed. It was cancelled due to the parts not being available yet. I’ll be taking the car in in the middle of July to get the radar changed and calibrated. This radar sensor is a vital component of the pro-pilot assist feature of the 2018 Nissan Leaf 40 kWh electric car. It’s also needed for the intelligent cruise control which is part of the same system. My car as it is the moment will allow me to use Pro Pilot Assist for 40 or 50 km before it starts to complain. On a longer journey it gets to a point where the car shuts off the possibility of using pro pilot assist and claims there is a system error. When I go to the car the next day to drive to work everything is all working properly again. I’d like to do a few more longer journeys so I do need to get this fixed as soon as possible.
When changing from Pro Pilot Assist to just using E-Pedal I find it takes a couple of seconds for it to change. This can sometimes mean I need to use the brake pedal to slow down in time for a junction. I have also found if I give the brake pedal or the accelerator pedal a touch it changes to the E-Pedal a little bit quicker. It is better to anticipate the junction sooner and to press the cancel button or turn off the Pro Pilot Assist. I am starting to change

As you may have seen in the previous video the Alfred app is more than just a application launcher for Mac OS X. In this video I highlight how you can use it for finding files and doing things with those files, such as putting them in an email. I show you two or three different commands for finding files and I also show you how you can get a quick look of a file which you have found it.
Some of the things that I show you in this video are specific to the Power Pack which is a paid for extra, that I think is worth getting. The power pack gives plenty of extra functionality and turns the Alfred up from a good and useful up into a super and bloody marvellous application.

## Road trip to France to test the Reveo RFID card
I recently got the new RFID card from Reveo and I wanted to test it out properly. With the card you can use a wider range of electric vehicle charging points in France. You also get a discount when charging. Instead of paying €3 to connect and use for the first hour you only pay €1.50. The per minute price after the hour is the same at two cents per minute. If you are charging after 9 PM in the evening there is no per minute charging cost.
On the way through towards France we stopped in Figueras at the Nissan dealership. When there are opportunities to put some charge into the car for free it's a good idea to take advantage of that. We arrived in the dealership with about 68% in the battery. While using the excellent facilities available and checking out a campervan conversion of the eNV 200 vehicle we were able to bring the battery back up to 90% before continuing the journey.
This time we took the road by the coast so from Figueras we headed towards Portbou and Cerbere. This was the closest Reveo charging point available. By the time we got to this charging point situated in a parking area by the beach it was time for lunch. Fortunately there was a pizza place open just across the road. We were there for just over an hour and the charging cost €1.78. Unfortunately the charger which is rated at 22 kW was only pumping about 3.3 kW into my 2018 Nissan Leaf. The chargers in France seem to be optimised for use with the Renault Zoe. It's disappointing the Nissan Leaf is only able to pull in at a really slow rate. When using the RFID card it isn't too bad using the time-based charging. It's still worthwhile to plug-in while you're doing something else like eating or having a wander around the town.
The next port of call was the town of Collioure which is a tourist town with a castle. It was a good place to check out and explore while adding electrons to the battery in the 2018 Nissan Leaf. This time we were therefore just over an hour and the cost of charging was €1.62.
Heading back home again using the main road and the motorways, the A9 and the AP 7. We went via Girona and pulled into the shopping centre. Unfortunately, due to the time of day, it was extremely busy. It wasn't going to be easy to put into the underground car parking and use the charging facilities. There was plenty of juice left in the battery to get all the way home so we didn't bother with the charge points. I would have liked to check it out

NoStylus - http://goo.gl/qhHRf - This is part of a series looking at art applications for the iPad. We have already looked at the applications Procreate, Art Studio and Artrage. Each of these applications have their good points and bad points, or strengths and weaknesses and one of the strengths of this application is that you get really nice lines that seem to be vector-based. This means that you can zoom in and out really close and the lines stay sharp.
Ink artist is free to download but you can pay extra to get the ability to work with up to 20 layers. Quite inexpensive and if you like working with the application then would be worth having. This application does miss out on some of the other tools that's the other applications have such as fill tools and selection options. The way that the background images are added is quite poor in that you don't get the opportunity to move and resize them after you have brought them in.
I could see that ink artist would be very good for an artist wishing to do a cartoonlike drawing. You don't get the paint mixing tools that you get with ArtRage and neither do you get a fill tool. I would like to see added to this application in the future and brush so that you could have softer lines, but that may not be possible if this application really is a vector-based drawing application. It would also be good to have the option with the eraser to create a softer edges as you rub things out.
Ink Artist is an application that I will be keeping on my iPad for occasional use because despite its lacking in some areas, what it does do it does well. In particular I like the lines that you can create with this and they would be good for the creation of drawings with a bit of style.

This is just the first in a series of videos looking at what you can do with Aperture on your Mac for dealing with your photos. The aperture application is so much more capable than iPhoto. It does seem a little bit complicated when you first look at it and you can see that you can use folders, projects and albums to organise your photos. Then on top of that you also have the smart albums and keywords to help you find your photos.
I have opted for a simple folder, project and albums organisation structure. There are two main folders one for creative photos and the other for family/personal photos. If I am working on something and all of the photos in the project are creative then it goes into its own project within the creative folder. Same sort of thing with the personal photos.
Quite often I go to a place or an event and I take photos that combine both personal photos and also creative photos and these I will put into their own separate project and just organise the pictures within, into albums starting with personal photos and another album for creative photos.
I have set up a number of smart folders which look for files that are based upon the year they were taken. Then I have other smart folders which look for photos based upon the camera used to take the images.
The extra spurious images that come into Aperture not as part of a larger project I will put into a folder called *Import here first* and this gives me a workflow that I can use to decide where I want to put those photos in my Aperture organisation.
Before I bring photographs into Aperture use automation on my Mac to rename the files based upon the date that they were taken and that way I can be sure that each of the files have a completely unique name.
I use keywording extensively with the photos and this ensures that I can find images wherever they are within the folder and project structure. If I want to find pictures that could have been put into any part of the Aperture application such as for instance looking for buildings then all I need to do is to use the keyword and hey presto I have all of the pictures to see in one place.
It does mean that you have to be quite fastidious in your keywording and tagging of your photos as you bring them into Aperture, but if you do this on a per event or Project basis it is quite easily done and the Aperture application allows you to set keywords very quickly also.
I could also help to find images at a later date by adding titles of the versions and maybe also captions. There is so much meta data available within photos that there is no reason why you shouldn't be up to find any photographs easily within Aperture.
