I loved The Rise of Ultraman and I am excited to see if the crew can keep up the momentum.
The Trials of Ultraman #4 – July 7, 2021
Writer: Matthew Groom, Kyle Higgins
Penciler: Francesco Manna
Color Artist: Espen Grundetjern
Cover Artist: Arthur Adams, Rachelle Rosenberg
In Iceland, the critics of the USP are uniting - and they finally have what they need to win the rest of the world over! But what are the dark consequences of their actions…and will Ultraman choose to save them from those consequences? Or perhaps a better question to ask is - with opposition mounting, alliances fraying and trust disintegrating, can he?
NEGATIVE
-Conspiracy Theorists
-Same Face
-Ide's Humor
POSITIVE
-Ice Pick
-Ultra Morality
-Kato's Secret
THOUGHTS
-Who needs a doctor, the healthy or the sick?
-There is a lack of moral clarity between the writing team and Ultraman himself. I think.
RECCOMENDED
Art: 4/5
Story: 2/5
Unsure.
This book is a NOT definite recommend. I'll have to see how it wraps up in issue 5 to see if the moral clarity is there or not.
You can get the book here.

The Trials of Ultraman #3 – May 19, 2021
Writer: Matthew Groom, Kyle Higgins
Penciler: Francesco Manna
Cover Artist: Arthur Adams and Rachelle Rosenberg
It turns out that the forces aligned against the USP and Ultraman are far more widespread -and more organized!- than our heroes had ever suspected. If they're going to survive, they'll need a new ally of their own…and the man they're looking at just so happens to be one of the most powerful and influential people in the world. But what's his history with the USP, and why does he seem to have his own hidden agenda?
THE BAD
-Manna's art is a little lacking and inconsistant for me in some areas. Here are two examples. Look at the video or, even better, at shownotes to see what I am talking about.
1. The Italians Ultraman rescues are reduced to having these 3 dot faces where there eyes and nose are jsut 3 dots as ther are shown in Ultraman's giant hand. That level of detail grates on me. Why not just color over their features or put them in sillhouette if you don't want to put the time and energy into properly rendering their faces there?
2. Kiki and Kato's adopted daughter Yuriko have the same face. There hair is even fairly similar, though Yuriko's is longer and more brown than black. At a glance, they could be confused for the same person. Look at Yuriko's face compared with the two Kiki faces I put on either side of it. The features are nearly identical and not enough has been done to differentiate them. That's bad. I don't get why this is being allowed. It would not take much to make them look quite distinct.
THE FUN
-There is this great shot where Ultraman is framed within the wreckage of the robo-kaiju torn asunder by that circular saw beam attack. It looks and feels so good.
-The countdown to detransformation was a lot of fun. The color timer adding stakes to Ultraman was a brilliant stroke 55 years ago and it works just as well today. Watching them desperately toss that core away where it couldn't hurt anyone was exciting. I even like Shin's little joke that followed in the aftermath of it.
THE GOOD
-Shin and Ultraman are so focused on saving people's lives that they let that kaiju get away. I love their dedication to protecting people, it raises the stakes and consequences, sets up tension with Shin at the USP and seeds danger for them down the line. What if that kaiju comes back at a bad time and they get hurt or fail to save lots of people because of this choice? That is some great writing. Potentially.
-Dan Moroboshi and Kato's kids and Fuji questioning the USP and having a healthy skepticism towards it is nice.
THE QUESTION
-What's Shin's dad's problem? I don't get it. Would he be dubious about his son being a firefighter or other dangerous profession that works to save people? What do you think his problem is? Is there something in his past to make things extra comic-book and soap operah-like or is it just a generational divide type-thing?
IS THIS A RECCOMENDED?
Yes. This issue was good. I enjoyed it. There are interesting things being set up, it basically stood on its own, except that it picked up from a cliffhanger moment and it told set up cool stuff for future issues.
All that being said, much like Dan, I have reason to be wary. The conspiracy theory angle and the people joining together to support the kaiju skeptic that worked for Kato feels like it is going to go in a bad direction. It feels very 2021 backlash agains those who dare question authority, even though the Rise of Ultraman adequately showed just why one should question authority. Also, we know that some malevolent force is secretly working the USP from the top. Remember Wheelchair Lady? She murdered a dude in cold-blood. She is the authority ATOP to USP and she ISN'T to be trusted. Despite the fact that Shin took heat from brass over saving people instead of killing the kaiju, it seems like he will be deployed to stop these dangerous radicals who want to prove that the governments of the world may not have the best interest of the masses in mind. This is some slippery terrain and I hope this series doens't fall on its face.

Ultraman Z Episode 20 To Care and What Lies Beyond - November 14, 2020
Writer: Yuji Kobayashi
Director: Masayoshi Takesue
The Artificial Life Form M1, created by Chief Mechanic Kojiro Inaba’s daughter Ruri, has malfunctioned and become gigantic! M1 doesn’t have bad intentions, but like this, it can do some serious damage! STORAGE puts a major operation into motion in order to stop M1 before it reaches the metropolitan area. Will they be able to save M1?!
ULTRA-BAD
-Bako seemed like a jerk with all his reticence to be around Ruri at first. That was really weird, especially with how things went.
ULTRA-COOL
-The dance sequence was a barrel of laughs and I enjoyed all their stall tactics
-Beta Smash is way more powerful than either of the mecha, that's a fun detail to see
ULTRA-GOOD
-Making the serum to revert M1 was so nice, especially in light of how broody the show has been lately.
ULTRA-DEEP
-We're fighting to save lives is the focus of the episides, this series and maybe all of Ultraman. It's so good and sweet.
ULTRA-QUESTION
Did Bako's behavior throw you off? Did it make sense why he seemed so put off by Ruri?
ULTRA-RANK
4/5
Ultraman Z 20 To Care and What Lies Beyond was a lot of fun. The bits of serious fighting were cool. The funny parts made we laugh and it was enjoyable all the way through. The focus being "to save lives" is so good, like I said earlier and it warms me to see it dealt with, especially because it would have been way easier to just kill M1, but they took a giher, harder route.

Love is Light - Avataro Sentai Donbrothers 17 Analysis |SSS 017
What is the balance between love and obsession?

Avataro Sentai Donbrothers 17 Tsubas'a Light - June 26, 2022
Writer: Toshiki Inoue
Director: Hiroyuki Kato
SOURCE: https://powerrangers.fandom.com/wiki/Don_17:_Light_and_Tsubasa
SYNOPSIS
Tsubasa Inuzuka, who has been on the run for keeping a secret, promised to his beloved Natsumi to meet her again after a year. But before said meeting, Tsubasa sees a man who is about to jump off a building. By transforming into Inu Brother and saving him, his true identity is revealed to Sononi. Wanting to know more about human love, Sononi offers Tsubasa a bet. She asks Tsubasa if he can turn the darkness into light of said heartbroken man because of love to prevent him from becoming a Hitotsuki.
NEGATIVE
-Weak monster design
POSITIVE
-Tsubasa carried this episode. Haruka started off the series as our POV character and took a fairly primary roll. That was great. Tsubasa got to take over this time and the rest of the cast was BARELY in this and it still worked!
DIRECTION
-Congratulations to Hiroyuki Kato for doing an amazing job making origami menacing and selling that portal effect. everyone did a great job, from the lighting to the acting to the paper puppeteers. That was beautiful.
WRITING
-I could watch Tsubasa the Love Doctor for a while. I wonder if Inoue's restraint on Tsubasa enabled him to pull this off.
REFLECTIONS
-What is the balance between love and obsession?
SCORE
Episode 17: 8/10
Solid episode. Great chracter work with Tsubasa. His tragic horror story background was a delight to watch, his perspective on love and his good heart make him possibly my favorite Donbrother and I love the twist in and comedy served by nearly making the rest of the team his supporting cast.

What do you think is the worst thing in Donbrothers 24?
The issues with Tomoko and Kouchirou are never really dealt with in any way that matters. He goes back, but not on his own terms and we don't know if she will change her approach to her son. I think both need to shift and grow, but the burden is really on her as the parent and I don't think the way that all gets papered over here is good. It was great that she recognized Kouichirou as a Hitsosuki. It was interesting that she let him be after he had been saved. Not doing anything concrete with those
To me, the #worst thing in #AvataroSentaiDonbrothers 24 is the bad take on the #mom and #son #parenting

This is an example of great storytelling. This reveal was set up in episode 2 and paid off in episode 5. The writing, cinematography and production do such a good job making this a novel reveal. Also, it have deeper implications and is fsr from a shallow twist or gimmick.

Fuuto PI 04 The Terrible of m/ Wings of Death - August 21, 2022
Writer: Riku Sanjo
Director: Yousuke Kabashima
SYNOPSIS
Narumi Detective Agency is hired by games company Max Soft to bodyguard Monako Moriguchi, the main programmer for the game Monster El Dorado who, unknown to the public, is also the game's idol Megu Kazamatsuri, after Megu receives death threats from someone known as "m". Meanwhile, Philip has trouble getting along with Tokime due to their conflicting personalities. As Monako performs as Megu at an anniversary event for the game, the event comes under attack from a Meganeura Dopant, who seeks vengeance against Megu. Although Kamen Rider W steps in to fight against it, the Dopant proves to have stronger powers than expected, including the power to control gravity. At that moment, Tokime is almost lured aware by a mysterious force, leaving Monako defenseless and forcing Kamen Rider W to rush in to protect her from the Dopant's attack. Receiving heavy damage to his body as a result, Shotaro entrusts Tokime and the others to continue protecting Monako.
MISSES
-Fan service
-The game is a little too local, maybe?
-How did Shotaro get hit? Why didn't he put his hat on his BACK?!?!?!?!!?
-How BIG is Tokime's head? I was alarmed at the size of her noggin!
--Triple Busted
HITS
-The tension between Tokime and Philip is unexpected and quite welcome
-Monako called Shotaro pretentious and he admitted it
-Meganeura's design is cool!
-W looks fabulous, that form showcase was a visual blast and also good for those new to Double
-SET UP! SET UP! SET UP!
--Shotaro has become quite the man!
QUESTIONS
-Does it seem like Aurora is going to do what the original W foes did?
-What is a "High Dope" anyway? Is that new? I think, yes.
-Monako being Megu was obvious, right? Is that a feint or lazy writing?
--Why did Aurora say fate is odd in bringing Tokime to a Kamen Rider.
SCORE
Episode 4 - 8/10
The action was incredible. While the nerd being the idol was fairly transparent, everything else around it was slick and Shotaro absolutely shone! I don't foresee this show dropping the TNA with Tokime, so I will basically ignore it, but I won't stop cringing at the masses eating it up. Sorry, y'all.
REFLECTIONS
Does the conceit of the narrator protagonist kill tension and drama? We know Shotaro survives this, so where does the excitement come from?

CLARIFICATION
I took some time to look into it (actually it is in the manga on the "cover page" before each section) and the first two runs of Gorenger collected in the Seven Seas omnibus are from two separate magazines and overlap each other. Swinging Through Comics 77 and 78 cover the entire run from Weekly Shonen Sunday (1975). STC 79 will start my coverage of the Shogaku Gonensei Gorenger (Gorenger SG 1-4) which ran monthly from April 1975 - July 1975. The tokusatsu Himtsu Sentai Gorenger ran from April 1975 to March 1977.
SYNOPSIS
An evil secret society called the Black Cross Army threatens world peace, and only an elite task force known as the Earth Guard League (EAGLE) can stop them. After the Black Cross Army destroys EAGLE's headquarters across Japan, five young recruits survive. Hiding in a secret underground base, they are given enhanced battlesuits that empower them with superhuman abilities, transforming the youths into an unstoppable squad to combat evil.

REFLECTIONS
Is this set up going somewhere?
IS THIS A RECCOMENDED?
No. It doesn't really feel necessary to the rest of the story. Then again Nathan and Marshall's slow build is really good after the fact. I almost dropped the series though. It's a high-wire act, I guess. I appreciate the boldness, but I would tell someone to just skip this issue, if they had to pick and choose.
