After catching a brutal stomach virus from a co-worker last week, I have been reviving myself with meat and art. Drawing with pencil and paper was truly a healing meditation through my work week as I continued to recover. When I don’t draw, especially with traditional materials, I don’t feel like myself at all. So on my first night off, after my first proper sleep in a week, I sat down at my drawing desk for a Surrealist ritual. As with my previous drawing video (https://youtu.be/rNd78maMmrQ), I improvised the entire sketch. This was an experiment with colored pencils, which I haven’t tried in a while, on fancy paper I rarely use. Afterward, I took a break for burger patties and a nap. Then I stared at this drawing, composing a little soundtrack for the image and its world. Some time ago, I composed a “1-Frame soundtrack” for a still of Peter Lorre from the 1935 horror film Mad Love (a.k.a. The Hands of Orlac). (https://youtu.be/DB153VoBSdo) I have always been interested in film composition, but as someone who draws so much, I also enjoy focusing on one image at a time. Images evoke sounds, melodies, and rhythms I would have otherwise struggled to conjure. And when it’s my own artwork, it’s a chance to explore another dimension of that piece ― instead of being simply done with it. Now that I’m feeling better, progress continues on unreleased videos!
