At the time, I was seriously injured from child birth, my baby was only three months old and fragile. Yet, I had to go throw all the trauma to leave China. Teenage mental health is at grave danger in the United States. According to a recent CDC study, the percentage of American high school students who report having "chronic emotions of melancholy or hopelessness" increased from 26 percent to 44 percent between 2009 and 2021. The amount of adolescent melancholy at this time is the highest ever noted.
In the first half of 2021, the government surveyed approximately 8,000 high school pupils, and the results showed significant differences in mental health between various groups. The incidence of girls reporting having seriously considered trying to commit suicide during the pandemic was more than one in four, which was twice the rate of boys. During the epidemic, nearly half of LGBTQ youth reported thinking about suicide, compared to 14% of their heterosexual classmates. Teenage whites appear to be seeing a faster increase in sadness than other groups.
The overall picture, however, is the same for all categories: Almost all indicators of mental health among teenagers are deteriorating, and this is true across the nation. Since 2009, the prevalence of depression and pessimism among teenagers has increased across all racial groups, homosexual and straight, straight and non-gay, students in every year of high school, and students in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Why is this occurring, then?
I want to offer a number of responses to that query, as well as a single meta-explanation that connects them together. But before I do that, I want to dispel a few alluring myths.
The first myth is that this can all be attributed to misbehaving teenagers. In actuality, many self-reported teen behaviors are developing favorably. Drinking and driving has decreased by roughly 50% since the 1990s. School fighting have decreased by 50%. There have been fewer sex acts before the age of 13. Bullying in school is declining. Additionally, acceptance of LGBTQ people has increased.
The second myth is that teenagers have always been moody and that the perceived rise in depression is really a result of increased openness to discussing it. Over the past ten years, there has been a substantial increase in objective markers of anxiety and despair, including eating disorders, self-harming behavior, and young suicides. The American Academy of Pediatrics reported in October that there has been a huge rise in emergency room visits nationwide for all mental health issues, including possible suicide attempts. Teenagers nowadays are increasingly at ease discussing mental health, but rising youth depression is not a mirage.
The third misconception is that the pandemic and an overreaction to COVID were the main contributors to the current mental health epidemic. According to Laurence Steinberg, a psychologist at Temple University, "rising teenage unhappiness isn't a new trend, but rather the acceleration and broadening of a trend that certainly started before the pandemic." But he continued, "We also shouldn't disregard the pandemic. The fact that COVID appears to have worsened teen mental health provides information on the root cause of the increase in unhappiness.
