Gottes Frieden, Teilen und Waffenstillstand
Im Mittelalter wurde der Gottesfrieden eingeführt. Er dämmte die aggressiven Impulse der Gesellschaft ein und legte fest, dass militärische Operationen zu bestimmten Zeiten des Jahres vorübergehend eingestellt wurden. Auch an Weihnachten 1914 wurde er nicht vergessen… irgendwo in den Schützengräben in Belgien. Ein Teil der Menschlichkeit wurde endlich wiedergefunden. Deutsche und britische Soldaten beschlossen, ihre Schützengräben zu verlassen, Zigaretten und Erinnerungen zu teilen und… ein Fußballspiel zu veranstalten. In den Wäldern von Ploegsteert (Comines-Warneton) stellten deutsche Soldaten auf der Spitze ihrer Unterkünfte mit Kerzen beleuchtete Bäume auf und stimmten Weihnachtslieder an, die von den Briten beantwortet wurden. Dieser Austausch wurde bis Januar 1915 fortgesetzt, obwohl jede Verbrüderung mit dem Feind strafbar war. Die Verbrüderung, von der Christian Carion in seinem Film „Joyeux Noël“ erzählt, ist inspiriert von dem, was sich in den Schützengräben rund um die Stadt Ypern abspielte.
Diese Ereignisse werden heute durch ein Kreuz in der Gedenkstätte Ploegsteert verewigt.
