Squandered Money Funding Mass Transit to Reduce Emissions
Cities often see mass transit as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and meet their climate targets, but rarely do people consider the 'embedded' emissions in the construction or whether those emissions would be offset by the travellers, and if so, in how many years. Robert Lyman has written a report entitled "Squandered Money" which addresses this. Likewise, claims that electric vehicles will reduce emissions fail to examine the fact that in most countries or regions, the power grid will have to be extensively expanded, along with related transmission lines and infrastructure. Plans to reach #NetZero by 2030 or 2050 are simply not in keeping with reality. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iccjgrnGLvY

This video concerns a recent CBC story wherein Binnu Jeyakumar of Pembina Institute was interviewed and said that Canada should set 'carrot and stick' policies like Hawaii was doing to force 100% clean electricity standard to meet Net Zero targets. However, neither Binnu, nor the CBC reporter, provided any context concerning the differences between Hawaii's situation vis a vis electricity generation and needs, or those of Canada. There was no research comparing solar insolation in both places, for example, which might show that setting such standards would not provide reliable power for Canada. Neither was there any comparison of Canada's electricity demands and industrial needs versus those of Hawaii. In short, there was no reasonable research done by either party and CBC is just 'gaslighting' citizens by suggesting that Canada can learn lessons from Hawaii about power generation and renewables - or renewables standards, when Canada is the 4th largest hydro power producer in the world and already has 61 times the installed wind capacity of Hawaii. This analysis by Michelle Stirling, Communications Manager for Friends of Science Society, references some existing materials from Friends of Science reports, and taps into publicly available data that either CBC or Binnu Jeyakumar could have easily found - except of course, their argument would have fallen apart. Canadian taxpayers pay over $1 billion a year for this kind of shoddy reporting at CBC. And CBC never bothers to ascertain whether the environmental groups they parrot are foreign-funded, by whom or for what objective - and whether that means there is a conflict of interest at play with foreign funders skewing Canadian energy policies via environmental groups like Pembina Institute and their faulty claims about renewables. On the evening of Dec. 1, 2022, the Alberta Electric System Operator issued a Level 3 grid alert, asking citizens to cut back on all electrical consumption as there was a shortage of electrical generation to meet demand during an extreme cold snap, with temperatures of about -40 C/F province-wide.. Michelle Stirling, Communications Manager for Friends of Science Society, discusses the challenges of putting more and more wind and solar on power gird, when these are weather dependent forms of generation. If there is no wind, or when the sun goes down, these sources vanish. Sometimes there can be regional lulls of wind for days or weeks. Then conventional power like natural gas or coal-fired power plants have to take up the slack. It turns out that there are plans to add about 10 times the wind to the Alberta power grid. This means we would also have to have ten times the conventional power to fill the gap. This would be enormously expensive. There are also plans to create a national wind-hydro east-west power grid which Friends of Science Society says would be technically very difficult and would put Canada at risk of national blackout. Further more, Robert Lyman has a new report called "The Pursuit of the Impossible" which summarizes a complex analysis by Simon Michaux about the availability of all the critical minerals required for NetZero decarbonization. It turns out that it would take decades to mine these materials and thousands of new power plants would have to be built. Michelle questions how Catherine McKenna's "Integrity Matters" report, about making the reporting of Net Zero plans mandatory for corporations - how does that make any sense when it would be impossible to accomplish such plans without these critical minerals? Please read our reports on power generation to better understand the risks we face such as heat-or-eat poverty, blackouts, curtailment and ultimately the loss of industry and jobs...and potentially the loss of lives. For the IPCC Cities Conference in Edmonton, Alberta, Mar 5-7, 2018, Friends of Science Society put up a billboard campaign. On March 5, 2018, the Calgary Sun reported that IPCC Chair thought we should do peer-reviewed papers, not billboards. The IPCC Cities conference had a focus on decarbonization - shutting down use of fossil fuels. We decided to see how IPCC Chair Hoesung Lee's country of South Korea is doing in the decarbonization quest - and what we found, was surprising. Albertans and Canadians are facing deep unemployment - thanks to policies based on the faulty science of the IPCC....and it turns out South Korea imports, emits and produces at will. Imports oil and gas from everywhere but Canada! Does not seem like they are trying very hard to reduce their emissions. But they sold Ontario a bunch of wind and solar farms! We know how that turned out. If that makes you feel mad, please send us a facebook comment, tweet or do a personal video clip about how climate change propaganda has damaged your life or livelihood. Speak up.

Canadian media seem obsessed with climate stories and some have signed up for Columbia Review of Journalism's global program entitled #CoveringClimateNow. But curiously, the biggest climate news of the year is that 500 scientists and professionals, and the Secretary General of the WMO, say there is no climate emergency. Shouldn't that be front page news? Especially, when it turns out Canadian taxpayers are underwriting most of the media who seem to be able to only tell one side of the climate story.

"From the archives... Robert Lyman, Ottawa energy policy consultant, former public servant of 27 years and diplomat prior to that for 10 years, explains how climate change targets are unattainable based on existing technologies; attempting to reduce emissions to meet GHG reduction targets will destroy all important industries and create socioeconomic rifts as there is no suitable mitigation method other than shutting down industry. While clean-tech advocates claim a 'breakthrough' is just around the corner, Lyman says this wishful thinking is "one of the most seductive measures that comes from the climate activists' hymnbook" and these claims have been going on for over 30 years with very limited results. Pouring money into research is important, but no guarantee - if so, cancer would have had a cure by now. No one knows when a 'breakthrough' will occur. Trying to reach unrealistic GHG reduction targets is a threat to Canada.

Friends of Science Society’s 19th Annual Climate Science Event will be a free, two-part, online presentation on the theme of “Net Zero + Green Grid = The Great Regret.” This year’s speaker on climate and energy policy will be Australian science writer, blogger and speaker, Joanne Nova. Joanne Nova’s event will go live on May 9, 2022, at 7pm MDT. Australia has faced ever increasing problems with their power grid as they try to incorporate more and more renewables. We can learn from their experience. Joanne shares her extensive research on this topic in the lightly titled presentation “How to destroy a perfectly good electricity grid in one million expensive steps.” There will be a live Q&A session after the presentation, hosted by Michelle Stirling, Friends of Science Society’s Communications Manager. Join in the debate and ask Joanne Nova questions about her presentation, her blog, or climate and energy-related issues in Australia. Join us on May 9, 2022, at 7pm MDT and help us restore open, civil debate and common sense back to the climate conversation. Remember to set a reminder on YouTube for this event.

Climate scientist Dr. Madhav Khandekar is a former Environment Canada research scientist, past IPCC expert reviewer, WMO regional expert, long-term member of CMOS - Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society. He discusses the temperature rise of the last 150 years and how there was rapid warming in the early 1900's, despite low carbon dioxide emissions from human industry, followed by a cooling period from about 1945 to the 1970's. Warming and carbon dioxide rise did coincide from about 1980 to the late 1990's, but since then, despite a rise in carbon dioxide concentration from human industry, there has been no statistically significant warming for about 18 to 20 years. These observations indicate that human industrial activity and carbon dioxide emissions are not the main drivers of climate change/global warming. Warming to date is similar to previous natural warming periods of the Holocene era.
