meet-the-instructor-feona-lee-jones-2019
My name is Feona Lee Jones and I am a pianist, composer, and educator based in the Bay Area, California.
I have been teaching piano and music theory to people of all ages and levels, from 3-year old beginners, to youth and teenagers, to retired adults, since 2000. I have degrees in Piano Performance, Electronic Music, and Composition. Some of my teachers included Robert Swartz (Juilliard), Marc Shapiro (San Francisco Symphony), and my current teacher is Dr. Kenn Gartner (Juilliard). In addition, I have been a teaching assistant for beginning piano and music theory courses at Diablo Valley College, UC Santa Cruz, and Mills College where I taught students privately both in-person and online, as well as in a large classroom setting.
I started playing piano when I was 6 years old, and it was something I instantly fell in love with. My grandparents were very artistic: my grandpa was a professional pianist and my grandma was a ballroom instructor, so I was immersed in a creative environment from the start. In middle school I began composing and won several awards for my compositions. Later on, I went to college and studied piano performance. Upon graduating, I received a bunch of film scoring gigs, and decided to go back to school to study electronic music to help me as a film composer. Upon graduating, I decided I wanted to further develop my voice more as a composer and ended up going back to school for music composition. You could say I have a thirst for knowledge and love to learn. As a teacher, I think it is important for me to always be learning and bettering myself as a pianist and composer so that I can be the best teacher for my students.
My philosophy of teaching over the past 19 years has simply been to inspire the love of music in others by creating a fun and positive learning environment. I work with my students to design an appropriate curriculum, whether you are interested in classical music, pop music, rock, jazz, film music, improvisation, music theory, composing, or a combination of these. I strongly believe that each student is unique and must be treated as such.
Thank you again for your interest and I would be more than happy to work with you.
