What Sarah Palin's lawsuit and Jim Lamon's ad teach us about violent political speech
Opinion: Violent imagery in a political campaign doesn't pull the trigger. But it feeds into an already volatile environment. and it has to stop. No good can ever come from even the hint of taking out political opponents with guns. For anyone. Just look at the legal fallout between Sarah Palin and The New York Timesover the paper’s mistake in linking her political action committee to the shooting of former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Griffords of Arizona. And just look at GOP senator wannabe Jim Lamon’s new ad showcasing a shootout between himself. President Joe Biden. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Mark Kelly. Lamon. who’s seeking the Republican nomination to take on Democrat Kelly. wins the shootout in the ad. of course. Kelly happens to be Giffords’ husband. which makes Lamon’s ad even more disgusting and incendiary – but more about that later. First. let’s look at how Giffords’ 2011 assassination attempt connects to Pailin’s takedown of The New York Times and incendiary talk of political violence. It's a high standard. but Palin could win Palin. the former Alaska governor and John McCain’s vice presidential pick. sued the Times over a 2017 editorial that erroneously linked a map circulated in 2011 by her PAC to Giffords’ shooting that same year. The map showed Democratic congressional districts. including Giffords’. under crosshairs. Palin’s ongoing...

Missouri are already scheduled to be closed Thursday for parent teacher conferences. The situation is leaving some parents to theorize that is why a decision has not been made by Wednesday afternoon. But these are different storms. There are also different options possible coming out of school districts including ‘late class starts’ that could be used. For now. parents are playing the waiting game. Sara Croke. founder of Weather or Not Inc.. helps decision makers make those decisions about weather. She often is involved in decisions on cancellations and changes of plans. She said the behind closed door discussions are different than general glib weather talk. “The decision makers are used to some of the nuances. Also. somebody might say we got nothing up North. Well. last storm they got four inches in Avondale. We got nearly five in Westwood which is right off the Plaza.” Croke said. “Now. 5 inches wasn’t 12 inches. It may be their forecast that they listen to said 12 inches. But they could have listened to Joe who said it was going to go Southeast and it did and they got lesser.” Croke said. “Regardless. they all got a plowable snow.” Croke said. The entire metro is under a Winter Storm Warning beginning midnight through 6 p.m. Thursday. After midnight. enough cold air will be in place for freezing rain to fall in spots. then sleet after about 4 a.m. Thursday. and finally snow after about 6 a.m. The FOX4 Weather Team is expecting a mess on the roads Thursday as moderate/heavy snow falls throughout the morning. Everything should taper off by 5 p.m. Thursday.

Olympians Madison Chock and Evan Bates Are in Love Off the Ice: They Talk 'Chemistry' and Wedding Plans
There's one word that describes the no words needed ease of communication between Olympic ice dancers Madison Chock and Evan Bates. who have been dating for about five years. 'Chemistry.' Bates. 32. told PEOPLE in a recent interview before he and the 29 year old Chock headed to Beijing for the Winter Olympics. 'That has always been the case. even before we were dating.' Bates says of their bond. 'We sort of would look at each other and smile.' Adds Chock: 'When you're skating together. you don't always talk and you don't always want to talk when you're training. It can be very physical and mentally challenging. And so you have to kind of read each other's signals — and over the years after being together for so long on the ice and then off the ice. you kind of pick up on the other person's nuances and understand what makes them tick or what kind of mood they're in just by looking at their body language. And that's really helpful for when we want to save our energy and just pour everything into our training.' It's boosting them in competition. too. They could also make it onto the podium in the individual ice dancing. which wraps up Sunday night (Eastern). After the first half of the competition. Chock and Bates were in fourth place with 84.14 points. just behind American teammates Madison Hubbell and Zach Donohue. If they continue to skate at that level. they'll see major...

Family and friends mourn Amir Locke at Minneapolis funeral after he was killed by police executing a no knock warrant
(CNN)Members of the Minneapolis community gathered Thursday to honor the life of Amir Locke. a 22 year old Black man whose killing at the hands of police during the execution of a no knock warrant has reignited debate around the controversial practice. Locke's mother. Karen Wells. reiterated her family's request to pass a law to do away with no knock warrants in her eulogy at her son's funeral. 'At the end of the day you are going to pass the law of the no knock warrants. ban it starting here in the Twin Cities where my son was born and raised.' Wells said. Ben Crump. an attorney for the Locke family. also called out Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for not banning no knock warrants. 'If you would have followed your ban on no knock warrants like you said. let's be clear. Amir Locke would still be here.' Crump said. CNN reported in November that Jacob and then police chief Medaria Arradondo announced they were instituting a policy that required officers to announce their presence and purpose before entering a building. except in special circumstances. At the end of the service. Amir's father. Andre Locke. said he was broken and called on Minneapolis police to 'do what's right' and to stop 'hiding behind the blue.' Police shot and killed Locke February 2 in a Minneapolis apartment while they executed a warrant in which he wasn't named. and that didn't require police to knock and give any occupant a chance to open the door. A brief body camera video of Locke's shooting shows an officer quietly sliding a key into the apartment's door. After the door opens. a group of officers barge in. yelling commands. Locke. who appeared to be sleeping. gets up holding a gun his family said he legally owned. Police then opened fire. Locke's parents have asked President Joe Biden to advocate for a national ban on such warrants in the name of their son. This week. a division of Minneapolis' Civil Rights Department announced it is leading a 'special review' of the police department's no knock warrant policy. The Office of Police Conduct Review will 'focus on identifying and recommending specific changes and improvements to departmental policy and procedures.' the city said in a news release. 'This important review will complement our engagement with external experts to provide needed clarity around the impacts of these policies for both community and officers.' Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said. Meanwhile. the officer who shot Locke. Mark Hanneman. has been placed on routine administrative leave pending an ongoing state investigation. During the raid that killed Locke. Minneapolis police were looking for suspects including Locke's teenage cousin and e

An Avalanche. a 50 Foot Drop —Then. a Miracle
(Newser) – A skier triggered an avalanche in Colorado on Sunday that carried him 200 to 300 feet. including a drop off a 50 foot cliff—but miraculously. he survived. Authorities say the skier and his mother had to rappel down into the chute they were skiing in Loveland Pass on Saturday. and after rappelling. a piece of their gear did not release correctly. They went back for it Sunday and the son cut across a steep slope on the ridge to get to it. CNN reports. The avalanche was triggered. and 10 minutes later. the mother. who had stayed behind. found her son buried up to his waist in snow. The Summit County Rescue Group responded to the scene. but the mother and son were able to ski out on their own. which the SCRG said was 'incredible.' the Denver Post reports. The son did suffer some minor injuries. Experts say skiers should know how to evaluate slope angles. as avalanche risk is highest on slopes that are between 30 and 45 degrees. They also say this appears to have been a case of what is called a 'terrain trap.' Per Avalanche.org. that's when 'a sharply concave part of the runout such as a gully. an abrupt transition. or a crevasse' can cause avalanche debris to pile up deeply. (Read more Colorado stories.)
