We can divide shapes into equal areas (equal parts) and write the area as a unit fraction of the whole shape. We can draw lines that will divide the shape into parts with equal areas. Then, we can write the area of each part as a fraction by using 1 as the numerator, and the number of equal parts as the denominator. We show examples of dividing several different types of polygons into equal areas. We divide them by folding them, or by drawing lines. We divide an irregular shaped polygon into equal parts by counting the unit squares, then dividing the total unit squares by the number of equal parts we need. We see how many triangles we need to make two hexagons. We see how 1/3 of a trapezoid is equal to 1/6 of a hexagon because they represent different sized wholes. We find the area of a shape, in rhombuses, that is made of both rhombuses and hexagons. We see the unit fraction that each rhombus represents of this shape.
