An explanation of how we can use "mental math strategies" to find a difference. We use a number line to show how we can mentally find a difference by counting up by tens and ones, or counting back by tens and ones. We use the strategy of making the subtrahend friendlier by adding a number to both the minuend and subtrahend. We show that we can make a subtrahend friendlier when it's a 9 or a 99 by adding one to the minuend and subtrahend. We use the break apart strategy to find a difference mentally. January 7th 2022, Miss Pickles looking for a vole. I mistakenly referred to them as a ''moles''. Before uploading the video, I did some research and found they are actually ''voles''. The vole is a rodent. A vole will gnaw at the base of a tree or shrub, especially in winter. Thus, metal guards are sold to prevent such vole damage. A vole may also damage flower bulbs and potatoes in the garden. But, mainly, the vole will eat the stems and blades of lawn grass. The runways they leave behind in the process make for an unsightly lawn, although voles do not leave behind big mounds of dirt the way moles do. Voles can also accidentally damage trees and shrubs by burrowing into their root systems, causing young specimens to experience die-back or to begin to lean. Voles have much shorter tails than mice, they are about 5 inches in length. Like mice, they tend to reproduce quickly. Within only a few weeks, a vole family could triple in size. Miss Pickles is a Jack Russell Terrier and Chihuahua mix. Many breeds of dogs were originally bred to be “ratters” — that is, their ancestors were bred to hunt and kill vermin. In fact, many of these dogs are terriers. Terrier is from the Latin word “terra,” which means “for earth.” Most terriers “go to ground” after burrowing animals, and these dogs have been used on farmsteads for centuries. Hunting rats is their specialty, but some were bred to hunt foxes and badgers as well as moles and other animals.
