EVERYTHING You Should Know About Eating DATES | Doctor Explains Health Benefits ?
In today's episode of Dr Nora, I take you through the substantial benefits of eating 1-2 dates per day as well as the problems of eating too many.
DATES Dates are brown soft, chewy fruits that grow on the Date Palm Tree. They are native to the Middle East but are also grown in Mexico, USA and Asia. There are over 150 types of dates, in this video I'll be focussing on the Medjool date which used to be eaten by royals to fight off fatigue.
Of course, as amazing as they sound they do have their draw backs. Dates contain a lot od sugar and calories so having too many can lead to weight gain. In addition they are not suitable for everyone. As they have a high Potassium content, those with kidney problems should check with their medical doctor to see if they are suitable. Additionally, diabetics and asthmatics should also be careful of consumption.
I hope you enjoyed this video and as always if you have any questions or comments please drop me in a line.

Wow! What a great result, as you can see our yummy mummy has taken nicely to her new lips. Starting from a thin upper lip to natural looking full plump lips, you can see a real difference. In our follow up 2 weeks later, you can see that the inflammation has settled and she's looking gorgeous.
This video demonstrates two injecting methods, linear threading and vertical lines.
- Linear threading injects along the lips to give definition and volume. It's also noted as one of the more comfortable injecting techniques for patients.
- Vertical lines are used to make the lips more plump and if desired giving a more pouty look.

Are you aged between 50-74? Are you up to date with your breast cancer screening?
If the answer is no to the above then it’s time to get screening.
According to the Australian Institute of Health & Welfare, only half of women in the target age group are taking up their two yearly free mammograms to test for breast cancer.
Breast screening is important for the early detection of breast cancer. The earlier breast cancer is detected the sooner it can be treated with more favourable outcomes. Breast screening also helps to provide women with reassurance following a normal result.
Breast screening is performed using a machine called a mammogram that pushes pressure onto the breasts whilst images are taken. This usually lasts for 10 seconds at a time.
These images are then analysed by a specialist doctor and the results are sent to yourself and your GP. You will then be put on a register to remind you to return every 2 years until the age of 74.
If you have any concerns regarding breast cancer or would like advice on how to check your breasts come and see me or your local doctor today.
For women who are eligible for a free breast screen visit breastscreen.qld.gov.au/

Time to kick the habit? In today’s episode of Dr Nora, I take you through why smoking cigarettes is so addictive, what the impacts are on health and how to successfully stop.
NICOTINE
Each year over 19,000 Australians die of smoking related illnesses. Cigarettes contain over 4000 chemicals of which 43 are known to cause cancer. One of those chemicals is called nicotine which is the principle reason why smoking can be so addictive. Once inhaled nicotine travels into the blood and passes through to the brain activating the reward pathway releasing a happy hormone called dopamine. Each time a cigarette is smoked, the reward pathway is activated and so the body craves more.
HEALTH EFFECTS
Smoking also causes a number of illnesses, such as lung cancer, chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Not only does it affect the lungs but it also is a major risk factor for heart failure. It also contributes to premature ageing and erectile dysfunction in men.
The good news is, once you stop smoking, a number of positive changes happen in the body, such as the protective barriers to the lungs and airways called cilia recover, more oxygen can be carried around the body and the risk of lung cancer is reduced to less that half that of a smoker after 10 years of cessation.
HOW TO STOP
There are many ways to stop smoking, however, we know the most successful people have the aid of support networks. Nicotine replacement therapy is aimed at those addicted to nicotine and can take the shape of lozenges, spray, gum or patches. Oral medications can be given on the advice of a medical practitioner. In Australia, e-cigarettes or vaping is a prescription only medication that can be used if the above methods have failed. It is important to know that vaping is not approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration as the long term side effects are not known.
Alongside medication, cognitive strategies can be implemented. These are strategies that use the power of thought to overcome addiction. Examples of this include keeping a smoking diary and see what triggers you to smoke. When you decide to stop smoking you can avoid these triggers. Another example includes keeping a list of the benefits of not smoking somewhere visible.
Behavioural strategies are used to help with the triggers of smoking. These include delaying the idea of smoking, taking a deep breath and performing another activity.
If you are planning to stop, always choose a target date and throw out any smoking paraphernalia, let your friends know you’re stopping too so they can support you. There are also a number of resources to get help from alongside your medical practitioner.

THE BASICS ON FAT
During our childhood and adolescence we have a set number of fat cells that remain with us throughout our adult life. It’s the changes in the volume of the fat cell that causes our weight to rise and fall.
The problem is that fat cells are unevenly distributed among our body so while diet and exercise does reduce the size of the cells it doesn't re-distribute them, leaving you with pockets of hard to shift areas.
This is the foundation that most fat reduction treatments are based on.
FAT HEATING
Stubborn pockets of fat are heated by laser up to 42-47C damaging the integrity of fat cells in the subcutaneous layer.
This form of fat reduction is licensed for areas including the tummy, love handles, back, inner and outer thighs and more recently the under chin area.
SculpSure takes 25 mins and 2 areas can be treated at the same time. It is reported that this method can reduce up to 24% of fat in a given area.
The main side effects that can occur, include a hot sensation which doesn’t burn but can feel pinching or tingling, bruising and firmness is also noted in the area following treatment.
Again, depending on the client 1-2 treatments are recommended with prices from A$600 per treatment. Full effects are to be noticed at 3 months.
CONCLUSION
In the next episode we catch up with our patient 3 months down the line and sit down one on one to find out how the post-treatment went and what results they experienced.

HEART RATE
On average the heart pumps blood 60-100 times a minute. The Apple watch monitors the heart function and it does this by using a sensor on the back, for this to work accurately, during setup you need to enter in your height, weight, gender and age. It gives you an alert if your heart rate is too high or too low.
Having a high heart rate - over 100 beats a minute can be a sign of an irregular heart rhythm, otherwise known as an arrhythmia, An example of this is Atrial Fibrillation. This is where the heart pumps quickly in a chaotic manor which can then cause small plaques or clots to break off from vessels causing serious medical conditions such as a stroke or other heart conditions. So with this regard the Apple watch certainly is useful, in fact there has been cases reported of people being correctly diagnosed via the watch for Atrial Fibrillation, prompting them to seek medical attention and potentially saving their lives.
But what about a low heart rate? This is a heart rate under 60 beats per minute, this can be normal in some situations, for example an athlete may have a lower resting heart rate. Similarly some medications or illnesses such as an under-active thyroid can also cause a low heart rate. It is important that you discuss your target heart rate with your medical doctor so that you can accurately use your Apple watch.
People who have an abnormally high or low heart rate may also have symptoms, such as fatigue, dizziness, lethargy, shortness or breath or fainting. Again if you do have these symptoms despite having a normal heart rate it is important to discuss this with your medical doctor and remember that the Apple Watch doesn't check for all types of abnormal heart conditions.
ECG/EKG
You may have seen the ECG/ EKG function (electrocardiogram) on TV shows like Scrubs, House, Casualty or Holby City, where we put stickers onto your chest to have a look at the electrical activity of the heart. It helps us to determine any rhythm defects, whether you've had a recent heart attack or any structural problems related to having a murmur. This feature is yet to be released to Australia.
MENSTRUAL CYCLE
One of the new health features is the ability to monitor and track the regularity of periods and any associated symptoms. This is particularly useful in patients who have underlying medical condi

In today's episode I inject 1ml of dermal filler using a multitude of techniques, including the Russian technique, to help Mary on her lip filling journey to plumper, more defined and hydrated lips.
Our beautiful patient today is no stranger to lip fillers and having increased the volume of her lips over a period of time, it was now time to crank up the definition to both the upper and lower lip as well as the cupid's bow.
To help achieve this 1ml of Hyaluronic Acid based non-permanent filler was used, typically this can last 6-9 months.
After using a strong, specifically compounded doctor prescribed topical anaesthetic cream, a number of lip filler techniques were used:
- Russian Technique, this is the use of vertical tenting along the border of the lips to help give the lips a wider more defined look without loosing the projection of the body. It is best employed in those without previous lip fillers, however, it worked beautifully on our gorgeous model.
- Linear threading within the body of the lips to achieve volume and projection.
- The fanning technique was used with linear threads to minimise the number of injection sites into the lips.
- Finally, structural support to the oral commissures was given to help lift up the corners of the mouth.
To ensure patient satisfaction and symmetry, the lips are assessed regularly. At the end of the treatment, the lips are cleansed with antiseptic cream and moulded into shape.
The patient was shown the before and after pictures instantly using Treatment Pad, an application that can be downloaded on the iOS store.
The outcome is fantastic, the lips look immediately plumper, more defined and hydrated. Needless to say, she was very pleased with the outcome. Be sure to check out the final outcome once her lips are settled over on instagram @drnoracosmetics.
