Music is about colors. And drumming is pretty much based on colors.
There are so many nuances, variations, details and flavors we can add to a song with our instrument.
The Hi-Hat is definitely the part of the drum set that allows for the most expressiveness.
In this booklet I wanted to gather a bunch of ideas that I have collected over the years, which are quite advanced but also incredibly fun to play and to include in our music.
I have divided them in 2 categories:
- Embellishments played with the hands, in 8ths, 16ths, triplets and even shuffle.
- Examples that use the left foot to play the Hi-Hat pedal (in which case we keep time on the Ride cymbal).

Simply put, reading music is not about reading but is about interpretation. That’s why being a good reader is not about literal execution of what’s written. It’s about adding what’s not written, which is most of what we actually play. Here we are going to use a 16th note drum chart to learn 5 different approaches, which are very helpful in becoming more comfortable and confident about our reading skills.

To permutate simply means shifting a phrase and assigning to it a new downbeat, starting in different spots every time, in given increments that are related to the subdivision used. This is an exceptionally useful tool for us drummers, if we want to fully comprehend what we are practicing.

I love shortcuts, and I always try to find ways to distill the best examples for each topic I cover, following the famous 80/20 principle. These are definitely among the 20 percent of practices that will give you 80 percent of the results as far as coordination goes.
They are quite challenging to play well, but the payoff is that you will instantly be more balanced, accurate and relaxed in your playing. As a result your grooves will sound effortless and your time feel will become a lot smoother.
