We are now starting and potting more plants for the remainder of August just to make the most of the growing season. In September and October we'll be doing more homesteading jobs and preserving autumns bounty from the gardens. This week it cooled down a lot since last weeks heat wave and with that the rain wasn't long to follow. Although the no dig gardens do very well during times of drought, plants are looking relieved and our new no dig garden has greened up a lot. Hopefully it'll turn into a canopy of produce by the end of September leaving no space for weeds to grow. We also waxed our first batch of cheese for practice and upon popular request we'll be making a video of our second batch.

We made a video to show how easy it is to harvest Jerusalem Artichokes when using the no dig mulch gardening approach. You don't even need tools, just bare hands is all it took to find several kilos of tubers in less than 2 minutes. It is also worth mentioning that we never take up all the various tubers from our gardens before the winter in order to replant in spring, instead we simply leave them in the garden beds under a layer of woodchip mulch keeping the frost off them. This method has worked through several winters with all kinds of tubers now, for example Potato, Oca, Yacon, Mashua and Jerusalem artichoke. As always, please let us know if you have any questions or comment below. We're happy to answer them.
For more info and pictures see our Useful Plants Series here: http://gardensforlife.ie/useful-plants-series-jerusalem-artichoke/
Also known as Sunchoke or Sunroot, Jerusalem artichoke is in the sunflower family and it was first introduced to Europe in the early 18th century. It is a versatile and useful plant with it's many uses beyond being ornamental. Plants reach 2.4meters / 7ft in height very quickly and are ideal for a pop up hedge or a wind barrier for the summer months. Tubers are plentiful and can overwinter outside in any well mulched garden. They do particularly well in no dig lasagne gardens and can even be harvested throughout the winter or left to grow in the next growing season.

This spring we have set up a grow challenge. You can grow food anywhere anyplace even without access to land. We are growing 6 different ancient edible tubers in pots and we are going to give the harvest away in a free giveaway raffle at the end of the growing season. We do like potatoes but in this challenge we included something a little more exotic - Oca, Mashua and Jerusalem Artichoke. What is your favorite root vegetable? Please comment below. :D
We have posted a video (see below) of setting up 12 large pots filled with compost mulched with woodchips and volcanic rock dust. These are in a permanent location in the middle of our nursery in full sun and will be looked after until harvest time. Although nearly zero maintenance they will be watered in times of drought. You can follow progress as we will post pictures and video updates during the summer.

Keeping chickens is easy and if your pen is in a permanent location it can turn to muck rather quickly, especially with all the rain we've been having here in Ireland lately. Don't worry though, there is a simple solution. By covering the entire chicken pen with a good thick layer of woodchips you will keep their feet clean and the chickens will happily scratch away turning the woodchips into compost which you can use in the garden. No fertility gets lost and you end up with cleaner eggs as a byproduct.

Youtube servers are slow to process 1080p! Sorry folk! Please check back tomorrow.
With the days getting shorter tuberous vegetables are preparing for the Winter, storing all their hard earned energy underground in the form of tubers. The first hard frost won’t be long knocking them all back to the ground and defoliating them. In this video we captured the garden just before this happens, showing the garden at it’s peak. We are showing what we have growing on in the garden and what’s part of the Winter selection in our online shop. The Pre-sale is on now! Use discount code: earlybird21 to get 15% off everything on our WEBSHOP.
