College Slam - Long Play (Sega Genesis/Mega Drive)
A completed Longplay of this sequel to NBA Jam, playing an entire season and then the tournie as the Michigan Wolverines.
Pros: Same great NBA Jam-style 2-on-2 gameplay. New powerups. More (fully customizable and editable) teams, new tournament (bracket) gameplay mode as well as college-style 20-game regular season. Some new animations like shattering backboard. Ability to call time-outs mid-half to replace players.
Neutral: Some new commentary ('From off-campus!' for 3-pointers) but favorites like 'boom-shakalaka' are left out. Players on teams are simply named by position, and some teams have two players with the same position. Season mode is random, and not conference-biased.
Cons: No real game-play updates aside from new powerups. Fewer player models, some animations are weaker, music is overall less interesting. Player ratings do not seem to reflect contemporary (1995-96) team performance - Duke and Arkansas are two of the worst teams for instance. Some notable colleges like Tennessee and Notre Dame are missing. Single-game single player mode does not allow picking of CPU opponent.

After their first surprise hit, Westwood Studios upped the ante with Command & Conquer: Red Alert. A landmark game in the annals of gaming history, Red Alert introduces to the commander all new naval and air units, including strike fighters. All of this is just so great, and it was released right around the time internet gaming was picking up. Back in my day, there were tons of skirmish matches being played all over the globe. Cool or what?
Of course this is not to denigrate the single-player campaign. Westwood rolled all the dice with having an actual Stalin actor. And the cut-scenes are just much more than the original C&C could deliver... really, Red Alert is essentially 'Command & Conquer: More Edition'.
The great thing about Command & Conquer contrasting to other real time strategy games, is that the sides are not balanced at all. The Allies have all the naval ships, the Soviets get all the cool air power, the Soviets have big damn tanks and the Allies... don't? And the base defenses... this game made the Tesla Coil iconic. It is really great in all the ways.
I will be playing through the DOS version (or maybe not) because I have the original discs and such, suck it Origin. And man is this gonna be some fun or what!
