Tertullian of Carthage was the earliest Christian writer to argue against abortion at length, and the first surviving Latin author to consider the unborn child in detail. This book is the first comprehensive analysis of Tertullians attitude towards the foetus and embryo. Examining Tertullians works in light of Roman literary and social history, Julian Barr proposes that Tertullians comments on the unborn should be read as rhetoric ancillary to his primary arguments. Tertullians engagement in the art of rhetoric also explains his tendency towards self-contradiction. He argued that human existence began at conception in some treatises and not in others. Tertullians references to the unborn hence should not be plucked out of context, lest they be misread. Tertullian borrowed, modified, and discarded theories of ensoulment according to their usefulness for individual treatises. So long as a single work was internally consistent, Tertullian was satisfied. He elaborated upon previous Christian traditions and selectively borrowed from ancient embryological theory to prove specific theological and moral points. Tertullian was more influenced by Roman custom than he would perhaps have admitted, since the contrast between pagan and Christian attitudes on abortion was more rhetorical than real.

As the planet warms and the polar ice caps melt, naturally occurring cold is a resource of growing scarcity. At the same time, energy-intensive cooling technologies are widely used as a means of preservation. Technologies of cryopreservation support global food chains, seed and blood banks, reproductive medicine, and even the preservation of cores of glacial ice used to study climate change. In many cases, these practices of freezing life are an attempt to cheat death. Cryopreservation has contributed to the transformation of markets, regimes of governance and ethics, and the very relationship between life and death. In Cryopolitics, experts from anthropology, history of science, environmental humanities, and indigenous studies make clear the political and cultural consequences of extending life and deferring death by technoscientific means. The contributors examine how and why low temperatures have been harnessed to defer individual death through freezing whole human bodies to defer nonhuman species death by freezing tissue from endangered animals to defer racial death by preserving biospecimens from indigenous people and to defer large-scale human death through pandemic preparedness. Don Smith - or Lelooska, as he was usually called - was a prominent Native American artist and storyteller in the Pacific Northwest. Born in 1933 of mixed blood Cherokee heritage, he was adopted as an adult by the prestigious Kwakiutl Sewid clan and had relationships with elders from a wide range of tribal backgrounds. Initially producing curio items for sale to tourists and regalia for Oregon Indians, Lelooska emerged in the late 1950s as one of a handful of artists who proved crucial to the renaissance of Northwest Coast Indian art. He also developed into a supreme performer and educator, staging shows of dances, songs, and storytelling. During the peak years, from the 1970s to the early 1990s, the family shows with Lelooska as the centerpiece attracted as many as 30,000 people annually. In this book, historian and family friend Chris Friday shares and annotates interviews that he conducted with Lelooska, between 1993 and ending shortly before the artists death, in 1996. A Hubbard quotation at the top of the page similarly urges the proselytiser to keep the prospects appetite for knowledge and mystery well stimulated so that he will and does become an actual Scientologist. I keep this in mind as I head downstairs (stolen papers stuffed to the bottom of my backpack) to find someone to evaluate my personality test. Having answered its two hundred strange questions Do you browse through railway timetables, directories, or dictionaries just for pleasure? Do you get occasional twitches of your muscles, when there is no logical reason for it? entirely at random, Im curious about the results. I ask a young man carefully rearranging the unsold stacks of shrink-wrapped Hubbard books in the Dianetics exhibition, and he calls for a colleague to help me. The woman who arrives is my age, with waist-length blonde hair and immaculate make- up. She takes my test for marking, and returns once for clarification on one question where Ive accidentally ticked across two boxes. She also asks me to add a postcode to the (fake) address Ive supplied. After around ten minutes, she calls me over to her computer. The screen shows a line graph that peaks in the middle, with lower points trailing on each side, similar to that pictured. Katie (not her real name) sits opposite me and explains the results.
