II. Astronomy.
1. "Galileo and Einstein" by Dr. Michael Fowler: http://galileoandeinstein.physics.virginia.edu

He describes the course as "This course explores two revolutions in our perception of the universe. The first, in which Galileo played the leading role, was the realization that what we see in the heavens—the Moon, the planets, the Sun and stars—are physical objects. For example, the Moon has a rocky surface, not unlike some parts of Earth, and is not made of some exotic ethereal substance, as had been generally believed before Galileo. This discovery, together with the mounting evidence that the Earth went round the Sun, led Newton to the realization that the motions of the Moon and planets obeyed the same physical laws as ordinary things (like flying cannonballs) here on Earth. Newton put this all together to give the first unified picture of the Universe.

"The second revolution was Einstein’s realization that this was not the whole truth—space and time are not as straightforward as they first appear, but are related to each other in a simple but unexpected way. Among other results, this leads to the surprising consequence that mass and energy are different aspects of the same thing!"

2. Physics For The Inquiring Mind by Eric M. Rogers
i. Free pdf (there are other pdfs of the book there; just search for them): https://archive.org/details/eric-rogers-physics-for-the-inquiring-mind/page/204/mode/2up
ii. Buy on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Physics-Inquiring-Mind-Philosophy-Physical/dp/0691151156

3. Introductory Physics: An Historical Approach by Herbert Priestley has a good section on the historical, logical, and scientific development of astronomy, although without as much detail as Rogers' Physics For the Inquiring Mind. This book is available on the Internet Archive if you register with them.

IV. Here is a good example of the failure of Platonic and “lost in math” “science.”
Excerpt: ”Galileo claimed to have seen moons around the planet Jupiter. Another scholar, Francesco Sizi, attempted to refute Galileo, not with observations, but with the following argument:

“ 'There are seven windows in the head, two nostrils, two ears, two eyes and a mouth; so in the heavens there are two favorable stars, two unpropitious, two luminaries, and Mercury alone undecided and indifferent. From which and many other similar phenomena of nature such as the seven metals, etc., which it were tedious to enumerate, we gather that the number of planets is necessarily seven...ancient nations, as well as modern Europeans, have adopted the division of the week into seven days, and have named them from the seven planets; now if we increase the number of planets, this whole system falls to the ground...moreover, the satellites are invisible to the naked eye and therefore can have no influence on the earth and therefore would be useless and therefore do not exist.' (Holton & Roller, 1958, p. 160)"
