Hey everyone, Nigel and Luke here and welcome to the second part of our 2 part series focusing on cases that took place in college dorms . If you haven’t seen part 1, be sure to check that out first, we’ll leave a link in the description below. As always, don’t forget to like and subscribe to Crime Zone for more true crime content like this, it really helps us to continue building the channel. With that out of the way, here is part 2 of “ 2 Chilling Cases That Took Place In College Dormitories”.
Hey everyone, Nigel and Luke here and welcome to Crime Zone.
As many of you are probably already aware, we experienced some issues with last week’s countdown list covering viewer-suggested cases. It was disappointing not only because we worked really hard on the video, but because it was supposed to be a special release — we wanted to cover viewer suggested cases in honour of our 100th video, as well as to thank all of you who have continued to support our channel.
While we unfortunately haven’t been able to confirm exactly what caused the problem, after running several tests we decided that the best way to ensure it doesn’t happen again is to split this particular list into 4 separate parts, each covering a single case. All of these parts are now available, and we’ll be sure to include links to them in the description below. We’d also like to announce that we will resume our regular posting schedule for our longer countdown videos next Thursday, and as a thank you for your patience, will be covering even more of the cases that you previously suggested to us.
With that out of the way, here is part 3 of “4 Interesting Cases That Were Suggested By YOU.”

Though many businesses have been suffering for the past couple of years due to ongoing restrictions placed on them in many places across the globe, one industry that has notably been thriving is the world of trading cards and collectibles.
While demand began to skyrocket almost as soon as we were all forced inside in 2020, the trend reached an absolute fever-pitch last year, especially when it came to collectible cards. Of course with this increased demand came soaring prices, bringing with it many people looking to cash in on the frenzy. And as retailers were swarmed with people looking to scoop up as many of these items as possible, it didn’t take long for an uglier side of the world of collectibles to come out.
In May of last year, a customer at a Target store in Brookfield, Wisconsin was walking to his car with sports cards he had just purchased when he was allegedly approached by 4 men who tried to rob him in the parking lot. He ended up drawing a gun on them and scaring them away without any injuries or shots fired, but the incident was still enough for the major US retailer to decide that it had had enough, and the in-store sale of MLB, NFL, NBA, and Pokemon cards was temporarily suspended. Similar stories have also emerged in other places, with card and memorabilia shops themselves becoming popular targets for robberies.
Being that both Luke and I have been into collectibles at one point or another in our lives, we thought that the whole thing might make an interesting topic for a video. When we did some digging, it turned out there were quite a few serious crimes that have involved collectibles over the years, 2 of which we decided to cover in today. Just a heads up, we’ll be dedicating an entire video to each one of these cases, so make sure to check out the description below for the link to the second case. There are also definitely other stories like these that we came across but that we didn’t have time to get to today, so if you want us to cover those in a future video, be sure to let us know in the comments section below. If you’ve been keeping up with the channel this week then you likely know that we’re doing things a little bit differently because our video editor is away on vacation. Unfortunately that means we’ll only be doing one long-form video release today rather than the usual 2, however, we’re hoping that the case that we’ve chosen will more than make up for it. If you’re bummed out though, don’t worry, we’ll be back to our usual schedule next week.
This is actually a story that we’ve been wanting doing for awhile now, but one that we could never seem to find the right list for. The story is almost too bizarre to believe — simultaneously so cliché that at times it feels like it’s ripped from the pages of a lazy mystery novel, while somehow still being genuinely shocking.
Before we get to the video, don’t forget to like and subscribe to Crime Zone for more true crime content like this, making sure to hit the notification bell to stay up to date with our latest releases.
With that out of the way this is the case of Stephen and Kimberly Hricko.

On a cold day in December of 2000, 3 friends were fishing on a secluded section of the Oder River in southwestern Poland when one of them noticed something strange floating in the water.
Little did these men know that they had just uncovered a crime that would both terrify and captivate the Polish public— one that might never have been solved if it were not for the obsessive determination of one investigator.

Though you may not have heard of the man himself, chances are you’ve heard of his namesake crime. A Ponzi Scheme is a form of fraud where investors are lured in with the promise of high profits, and work by paying earlier investors with the money from more recent ones. The scheme works as long as there is a constant flow of investors and most still have confidence in the business and in do not demand full repayment.
Despite not being the first person to commit such a crime, con artist Charles Ponzi’s name became synonymous with this kind of fraud due to the notoriety of his case.
In the 1920’s, Ponzi scammed investors out of more than $20 million using a fraudulent investment opportunity involving postal reply coupons. It started when Ponzi noticed a legitimate loophole. The coupons, which were intended to be used to obtain postage stamps to reply to international mail, could technically be exchanged for a higher value in the U.S. than their country of origin. Ponzi sold this idea as an investment opportunity, offering clients a 50-100% profit if they would give him the money to buy these postal reply coupons. The scheme was far from realistic, as Ponzi never figured out a way to convert the coupons to cash efficiently. It is estimated that in order to actually make a profit, Titanic-sized ships filled with postal coupons would have had to have been shipped to the US from Europe. Despite this, the money kept rolling in, and Ponzi found that for the most part he could cover the old investment profits with the money from new investors, as most people kept reinvesting their money anyway. During his scam he lived lavishly, spending the money of his investors before the operation collapsed.
The size and damage of these schemes has only continued to grow since the days of Charles Ponzi, with the largest such example being the 2008 case of Bernie Madoff, which is estimated to have resulted in losses around $65 billion. Though many of these Ponzi Schemes are relatively simple cases of investment managers promising returns that are too good to be true, there are some stranger Ponzi Schemes that have emerged over the years. Today we want to take a look at some of these strange cases, focusing on Ponzi Schemes from all over the world that in addition to being criminal, are also pretty bizarre.
