With a diameter of about 2,300 km (1,400 mi),[6] it is the largest unambiguous impact structure on the planet; the obscured Utopia Planitia is slightly larger (the Borealis Basin, if it proves to be an impact crater, is considerably larger). Hellas Planitia is thought to have been formed during the Late Heavy Bombardment period of the Solar System, approximately 4.1 to 3.8 billion years ago, when a protoplanet or large asteroid hit the surface.[7]
The altitude difference between the rim and the bottom is over 9,000 m (30,000 ft). The crater's depth of 7,152 m (23,465 ft)[1] below the topographic datum of Mars explains the atmospheric pressure at the bottom: 12.4 mbar (1240 Pa or 0.18 psi) during winter, when the air is coldest and reaches its highest density.[b] This is 103% higher than the pressure at the topographical datum (610 Pa, or 6.1 mbar, or 0.09 psi) and above the triple point of water, suggesting that the liquid phase could be present under certain conditions of temperature, pressure, and dissolved salt content.[9] It has been theorized that a combination of glacial action and explosive boiling may be responsible for gully features in the crater.
Some of the low elevation outflow channels extend into Hellas from the volcanic Hadriacus Mons complex to the northeast, two of which Mars Orbiter Camera images show contain gullies: Dao Vallis and Reull Vallis. These gullies are also low enough for liquid water to be transient around Martian noon, if the temperature were to rise above 0 Celsius.[10]
Hellas Planitia is antipodal to Alba Patera.[11][12][13] It and the somewhat smaller Isidis Planitia together are roughly antipodal to the Tharsis Bulge, with its enormous shield volcanoes, while Argyre Planitia is roughly antipodal to Elysium, the other major uplifted region of shield volcanoes on Mars. Whether the shield volcanoes were caused by antipodal impacts like that which produced Hellas, or if it is mere coincidence, is unknown.

Colonization or settlement of Mars is the theoretical human migration and long-term human establishment of Mars. The prospect has garnered interest from public space agencies and private corporations and has been extensively explored in science fiction writing, film, and art.
Organizations have proposed plans for a human mission to Mars, the first step towards any colonization effort, but no person has set foot on the planet, and there have been no return missions. Water vapor was reported found on the Moon by scientists at Rice University in 1971. They detected geysers of water vapor erupting through cracks in the lunar surface, indicating the presence of pools of water beneath the otherwise dry and barren landscape. The discovery was made using instruments left on the Moon by Apollo astronauts, with the geysers observed on the eastern rim of the moon’s Ocean of Storms. The event lasted for 14 hours and coincided with small moonquakes, spreading water vapor clouds over an area of about 100 square miles. While some scientists were cautious in their assessment until further data analysis, Dr. John W. Freeman Jr. and Dr. H. Kent Hills from Rice University considered it one of the most exciting discoveries from the Apollo missions. The findings raised questions about the existence, depth, extent, and potential utilization of subsurface liquid water on the Moon for future lunar exploration and habitation.
Dr. Freeman mentioned that if there is indeed liquid water beneath the lunar surface, it could provide a valuable resource for heat, energy, and water for potential lunar bases in the future. The discovery challenged previous assumptions that the Moon was entirely devoid of water and prompted a reevaluation of existing theories about lunar composition and history. The detection of water vapor was based on data from suprathermal ion detectors left on the Moon by Apollo missions 12 and 14, which were designed to measure ions near the lunar surface but unexpectedly captured evidence of water vapor eruptions through their unique signatures matching laboratory data for water vapor. Further research was needed to pinpoint exact locations accurately and study additional geysers using improved instrumentation deployed during subsequent missions like Apollo 15.

Chandrayaan-3 (/ˌtʃʌndrəˈjɑːn/ CHUN-drə-YAHN) is the third mission in the Chandrayaan programme, a series of lunar-exploration missions developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).[7] Launched on 14 July 2023, the mission consists of a lunar lander named Vikram and a lunar rover named Pragyan, similar to those launched aboard Chandrayaan-2 in 2019.
Chandrayaan-3 was launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre on 14 July 2023. The spacecraft entered lunar orbit on 5 August, and the lander touched down near the Lunar south pole[8] on 23 August at 18:03 IST (12:33 UTC), making India the fourth country to successfully land on the Moon, and the first to do so near the lunar south pole.[9][note 1] On 3 September the lander hopped and repositioned itself 30–40 cm (12–16 in) from its landing site.[13]
The Vikram lander and Pragyan rover were set to sleep on 2 September and 4 September respectively due to depleting solar power with sunset at the landing site. The lander and rover were scheduled to start working again at local sunrise on September 22.[14][15] However on 22 September, Vikram Lander and Pragyan rover missed Wake-up call.
