Kunekune Pigs Get Outside Today Another light video for today, and since its been so nice out the kunekune pigs get some time outside as the snow melts. We have been very pleased with these little pigs since we first brought them home last year, and continue to enjoy their laidback personalities. They are a very easy to handle small breed which makes them enjoyable to work with on a small farm. We are looking forward to piglets some time this spring!

Icelandic Sheep | Sorting Our Sheep Into Breeding Groups, Ear Tags and General Check Over
Well even though we had the best of intentions to get our Icelandic sheep into their breeding groups earlier this year, here we are mid December again, lol. In today's episode, we sort sheep and get ear tags in for registration and do a general check up on body condition. Our Icelandic Sheep flock has been slowly growing over the years and this year we are splitting 12 ewes into breeding groups.
Sheep have become a major feature of our Canadian homestead. Be sure to subscribe so that you do not miss any of our adventures in growing this sheep flock.
Thanks so much for watching!

Today we are discussion raising geese and our American Buff Goose Flock. We figured it was worth sharing some thoughts on building a flock of geese or other poultry from our perspective of raising poultry for over a decade. Hopefully you find this video on raising geese interesting or at least some food for thought related to the topic of building a goose flock or flock of other poultry such as chickens or ducks.
Thanks so much for watching!

Making sugar from sugar beets has been an interesting experiment for us. Sugar has always been a "prep" for us. It is needed for canning, baking, or just for that little pick me up. So in 2020 we decided to see if we could produce our own sugar from sugar beets, thus making us a little less dependent on the system.
In this video, we share with you how we processed the beets and the final results. Let us know, in the comments below, what you think and if you may give it a try.
Thank you so much for watching. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe.

Homestead Cooking | Sorghum Recipe | Easy Sorghum Syrup Cookie Recipe
Today on homestead cooking we are using some of our sorghum syrup. We made this syrup in an experiment in the fall of 2021 and sorghum will be a prominent part of our homestead in 2022!
Recipe:
1 3/4 cup flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup sorghum syrup
1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
Sugar for rolling
Preheat oven to 375°F. Butter or line two baking sheets.
Combine flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, allspice and cloves in small bowl.
In larger bowl, beat butter, sorghum syrup and both sugars together until smooth. Mix in egg and vanilla and stir until combined.
Add flour mixture to butter mixture and mix until a dough is formed. Refrigerate dough for at least 1 hour.
Using a tablespoon, form cookie dough into 1-inch balls. Roll balls in sugar until fully coated and place onto cookie sheets. Bake cookies for 8-10 minutes, or until edges of the cookies are set. Cool in pan for about 10 minutes.
Enjoy!
Thanks so much for watching!

Today we are making sugar beet syrup from our homegrown 2022 sugar beet harvest. This process is similar to making maple syrup, but with the added bonus of being able to use sugar beets that you can easily grow on your own property! We're huge fans of beets, and the sugar beet is no exception, as it provides multiple products, including syrup and even a tasty beet pulp for cooking. If you're interested in sustainable living and looking for new homesteading ideas, growing sugar beets is a must-try. Don't miss out on this underrated root vegetable that has so much to offer!

Natural Garlic Spray To Help With Cabbage White Butterflies on Brassicas
It's that time of year where the Cabbage White Butterflies are starting to show up in numbers.
These butterflies love members of the cabbage family and they can do a fair bit of damage in a short time. So a natural solution we have found to be reasonably effective is a garlic emulsion spray.
This particular recipe comes from Jerry Bakers' Terrific Garden Tonic's book which was recommended by Pinball Preparedness. and is a little different than the mix we tried in 2021 though still based around garlic.
The recipe for this natural garlic spray is simple.
4 whole cloves
1 handful of wild mustard leaves
1 clove of garlic
1 cup boiling water
Of course this can be easily scaled up for more emulsion.
We hope you enjoy this little tip.
